Statement From Former Rhode Island Congressman Patrick Kennedy:

“New York’s lawmakers have just a few days to show the nation they won’t be duped by Big Marijuana’s empty promises and deliberately deceptive rhetoric. Legalizing pot in New York will not lead to social justice, empowerment for minority communities, an end to the opioid crisis or mountains of revenue to close budget gaps. It will make money for a predatory industry and take lives. Despite the claims of the pot industry, the mental and physical health impacts, the real public safety concerns and the costs to taxpayers will be significant if not irreparable. I implore our elected officials not to listen to Wall Street investors and vote on the side of parents, teachers, clergy, doctors, treatment specialists and law enforcement. Don’t be duped. Get this right.”

Statement From Senator Tom O’Mara:

State Senator Tom O’Mara (R, Big Flats) voted against legislation given final legislative approval by the Senate today that will allow New York to issue driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has made the enactment of the so-called “Green Light” legislation (S1747/A3675) a priority this session and is expected to sign it into law.

O’Mara once again blasted the move as reckless and the product of one-party, radically progressive, Democratic control of state government.

“Governor Cuomo and the Legislature’s Democrats are behind the wheel, recklessly running red lights, and speeding this state down a radical, irresponsible road to ruin as a high taxing, big spending haven for lawbreakers. Welcome to one-party control,” said O’Mara. “Lawbreaking illegal immigrants should never be rewarded with a government-issued driver’s license. It puts public safety and security at risk, imposes another unfunded mandate on counties, and asks local, law-abiding public servants to break the law.”

The new law will permit illegal immigrants to apply for a standard New York State driver’s license using forms of foreign identification. Among numerous concerns, O’Mara and other opponents argue that county clerks and employees at local Departments of Motor Vehicles (DMV) are unable to verify the authenticity of foreign IDs.

The New York Association of County Clerks opposes the action.

HORNELL, NY – Monday evening the Hornell Common Council authorized the City of Hornell to pay in the 100% of the federal and non-federal share of the cost of Design and Right of Way Incidentals and Acquisition work for the Canisteo Bridge Project.

The Bridge Replacement on Canisteo Street over Crosby Creek, is eligible for funding of 80% Federal funds and 20% non-federal funds. The city has made available $453,000 to cover their cost of the Project. If the city’s share exceeds that amount, the Common Council will meet as soon as possible to provide the excess amount immediately.

The city also granted Code Enforcement officers Bud Burdette and Larry Bacon the power to enforce all rules and regulations created by the newly established “Tree Board” in the city. The board was created because Hornell has the status of an Arbor City.

Tree Boards are created to study, investigate, counsel, develop, update annually and administer a written plan for carrying out the planting, removal, maintenance and protection of all trees and shrubs on public areas.

The Council also approved Melissa Logan as Marriage Officer and Deputy Registrar of Vital Statistics for a 2 year term starting July 1^st, 2019.

Lastly, the Common Council approved the re-appointment of Norm Ellis to the Hornell Public Library Board of Directors for a three-year term to begin Feb. 1, 2019.

HORNELL – The pool at Veteran’s Memorial park will be open Tuesday, June 25 thru Sunday, June 30 from 1:00pm – 5:00 pm. The City Summer Recreation Program will officially begin on Monday, July 1, 2019.

As of July 1, 2019, the pool will be open the following hours:

Monday – Saturday
10:00 am – 11:45 am Open Swim
1:00 pm – 4:45 pm Open Swim
6:00 pm – 7:45 pm Family Swim

Sunday
Noon – 5:45 pm Open Swim

The baby pool will be closed for maintenance on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.

Playgrounds at the Columbian School, Bryant School, High School, Stephens St., Madison Ave. and James St. Park will be open for the summer on Monday, July 1. Playground hours are 9:00 am – noon and 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm.

JAMESTOWN, NY – From State Senate candidate George Borrello:

Chautauqua County Executive George Borrello, the endorsed Republican, Conservative and Independence candidate for the State Senate’s 57th District, today announced his First Employee Tax Credit Plan. The legislation, which would be one of the first bills he’d sponsor in the Senate, would assist single-owner start-ups to expand their operations and bring in their first employee.

Approximately half of the small businesses in New York State are sole proprietorships. Once a sole proprietorship moves to having paid employees, owners are responsible for workers compensation insurance and added business costs. Borrello’s plan would give a state income tax credit to any business when it adds its first permanent payroll employee. In the first year, that credit would be 25 percent of the cost to employ that person (payroll, insurance, state and federal taxes) for the first year. It would lower to 20 percent the second year and 10 percent in the third year.

“For New Yorkers to succeed in our state’s economy, more and more people are starting their own small businesses. Rather than make it difficult for these new entrepreneurs to succeed, we must do more to make it easier,” Borrello said. “I’ve seen firsthand as a business owner that moving from a one-person operation to adding an employee is a major and costly step.”

“Since adding just one employee disproportionately increases costs, taxation, regulation and overall burden, I am proposing a First Employee Tax Credit,” he added. “Not only will this help a one-person operation expand his or her business by reducing their cost, it’ll help more men and women find good-paying jobs.”

George Borrello is running to fill the vacant 57th Senate District seat which became vacant following Cathy Young’s retirement.

UPDATE – 1:24pm – Sportscaster Joel Oriend says that because one of other semi-finals games in Glenns Falls today, went 20 innings long, the Class D State Finals game won’t start at 1:30pm. Officials are discussing when to start the Class D State FInals game with Alfred-Almond’s Varsity Girls Softball team. As soon as WLEA finds out when the time for the Finals will be, we will announce it, both on the radio and on Wlea.net, as well as on our FB page.
