Dodgers Beat Sherill On Monday

The Hornell Dodgers scored 19 runs and collected 24 hits in a Monday afternoon sweep of Sherrill. The Dodgers won 10-6 and 9-7 to improve to 15-6-1 on the season. In the opener, Sherrill jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 1st. Matteo Avallone (Alfred State) got the Dodgers on the board in the bottom of the inning when he doubled home Mitch Daniels (Webster). Daniels had led off the inning with a double of his own. The Silversmiths added another run in the 2nd but Wade Kelly (Coastal Carolina) connected on the first of two solo homers in the game to make it 5-2.

Hornell took the lead for good with a eight-run 4th inning. Kelly led off with his second homer. Matt Staker (Webster) hit a RBI single and Daniels tied it when he collected a two-run single. Daniels and Mann scored on wild pitches, Avallone scored on a passed ball, and Kelly scored after a throwing error after he swiped third base. Sherill cut the lead to 10-6 with a run in the 6th but wouldn’t get any closer. Daniels was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI while Avallone was 2 for 3 with a RBI (two doubles). Kelly was 2 for 3 with the two solo homers and Brody Burdett (Alfred State) was 2 for 3.

Lewis Pettit (Alfred State) allowed two earned runs on eight hits in six innings of work to earn the win on the mound. He walked five and struck out four. Alec Appelbaum (Camden County CC) struck out a pair in the 7th. The nightcap went back and forth. Sherill scored a run in the 1st but Hornell answered with two in the bottom half of the inning. Jack McDonald (Wilmington) hit a RBI groundout and Avallone hit a RBI triple to right. The Silversmiths plated two in the 2nd but Daniels gave Hornell back the lead with a 2-RBI sinlge. McDonald drove in another run with a RBI fielder’s choice and Daniles scored on an error.

Ryan Hill (Monroe CC/Mercyhurst) collected a RBI single in the 3rd to make it 7-3 but the Silversmiths tied it up with three of their own in the top of the 4th. The Dodgers took the lead for good in the 5th with a pair of runs. Hill collected a single and a pair of errors allowed Levi Hall (Webster) to score. Hill added an insurance run two batters later when he scored on a wild pitch. Dom Grady (Wilmington) came out of the pen and allowed just one hit in the final two innings to earn the save. Danny Sullivan earned the victory with 1.2 innings of relief work. Daniels was 2 for 2 with a pair of RBI and finished the day 5 for 6 with 4 RBI. Avallone was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and finished the day 4 for 7 with four extra base hits. Hill was 2 for 2 with a RBI and a pair of runs scored while AJ Gonzalez (St. Thomas Aquinas) was 2 for 4.

The Dodgers are now 13-2-1 in their last 15 games. Hornell has Tuesday off before hosting the Rochester Ridgemen on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
