HORNELL-James R. “Woody” Wood, 53, passed away suddenly early Friday evening (Sept. 14, 2018) at Elderwood at Hornell, where he has resided for nearly the past year.
Born in Hornell on Aug. 2, 1965, he was a son of the late John E. and Madeline J. (McCarthy) Wood. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, John and Sherry Wood, and his two sisters, Sally Winrock and Patricia Pinzok.
A life long resident of Hornell, Woody was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1983.
At one time he was employed at Wegmans in Rochester and Sear’s in Hornell. He eventually became employed as a bartender at Joe’s on Loder Street in Hornell and later at the Arthur H. Cunningham American Legion Post No. 440 in Hornell; where he was instrumental in taking up a collection for a party and gifts for area children during the Christmas season.
Woody was a member of the Hornell Elks Lodge No. 364 and the Sons of the American Legion. He was also an avid Boston Red Sox fan and enjoyed playing drums.
He will be remembered for his wonderful smile, his willingness to always help other in need and for never saying a bad word about anyone. Woody will be dearly missed by all of those who knew and loved him.
His loving family includes his four sisters, Sue, Cindy and Melinda Wood all of Hornell and Mary (Mark) Howe of Shelby, N.C.; his two brothers-in-law, Mark Winrock of Rochester and Mark Pinzok of Pittsburgh, Pa.; also, his nieces, nephews, one uncle, three aunts, several cousins; as well as his many devoted and caring classmates and friends.

Calling hours are 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 22, 2018) at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral service will be held in his memory following the calling hours at 1 p.m. Saturday, with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Private interment will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont at the convenience of the family.
Because Woody loved animals, especially his cats, the family has requested that in lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to the Hornell Area Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Park Road, Hornell, N.Y. 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
