NORTH HORNELL-Louis P. Sherwood, 94, of Seneca Road, passed away Sunday (March 17, 2019) at his home surrounded by family.
Born in Wellsville, NY, October 23, 1924, a son of Clifford and Neva (Green) Sherwood, he had resided in North Hornell since 1986, prior to that he had resided in Whitesville for 34 years. He was a graduate of the Andover School District, Class of 1942. On November 27, 1947 he married the former Esther Fanton who preceded him in death on March 6, 2008.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a fervent patriot. He was a member of the Robert E. James Post of the American Legion in Whitesville throughout his adult life and participated in Whitesville’s Memorial Day Parade well into his 90’s. He was employed for 29 years at Air Preheater in Wellsville until his retirement in 1981.
“Louie,” as he was known to friends, grew up during the Great Depression and like his father, was skilled in the building trades and fine woodworking. He enjoyed home improvement projects and his services were sought after by friends and family. The many hours he spent in his woodworking shop yielded finely crafted furniture and toys for his grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He also enjoyed deer hunting.
He and Esther nurtured a close-knit family that remains so today. He liked nothing more than spending time with his family and witnessing their progress in life – and so it is a blessing that he spent his last hours on this Earth doing just that.
He is predeceased by his parents, his wife Esther, a daughter; Terry Louise Pritchard in 2008, a grandson; Duncan Geffers in 2018 and his brother; Stanley Sherwood. He is survived by 3 daughters; Sharon Ann (Pat) Ainsworth of New Jersey, Judy Lynn (Thomas) Flamini of Alfred Station and Cheryl Diane (Rob) Geffers of Tennessee, 2 sons; Lynn Louis (Melinda) Sherwood of Kentucky and Paul Duane (Karen) Sherwood of Kentucky, a son-in-law; Blair Pritchard of Hornell, 15 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, a brother; Wayne (Cassie) Sherwood of Florida, a sister-in-law; Dorothy Sherwood of Wellsville as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
