Genesee Valley 13, Arkport 5
HORNELL – Genesee Valley coach Eric Weinman knew all about Arkport’s high-octane offense and he prepped accordingly.
“I know Arkport. In one game alone, they scored 27 runs,” Weinman said. “We’ve known some of their kids for years through soccer and I know the soccer coaches. It’s become a nice little rivalry over the years, and we knew that they were going to hit the ball today – that was the deal today. We just wanted to try and make the easy plays and understand that they were going to hit.”
The Jaguars made the easy plays when they had to, along with several others with a higher degree of difficulty – they turned at least a pair of double plays – securing a spot in the program’s second-ever Far West Regional Qualifier with a eye-glaring 13-5 victory over the Arkport Blue Jays in Tuesday evening’s Section V, Class DD-D playdown game hosted by Hornell High School’s Maple City Park.
“At 4-0, you’d like to think you’re in pretty good shape, you’e right where you want to be,” Weinman said when asked about his level of comfort. “When it got to 10-5 I felt a whole lot more comfortable than I did when it was 8-5. A three-run game against those guys, they’ve got some kids who can put it out of the park – they’ve got some hitters. And with both pitchers not having their best stuff today it just seemed to be more of a war of attrition than anything else.”
Cooper Weinman went the distance for the green and white, striking out five and walking three. He aided his own cause at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a triple and a double.
Cody Schneider paced GV at 4-for-4 with two RBI, Carter Schneider matched his pitcher with a 3-for-5 effort of his own, driving in four runs, and Noah WIndus ended up 2-for-4. Carson Werner also chipped in at 1-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
For Arkport, Nate Warczok and Jordan Wood were each 2-for-4. Andrew Merry followed at 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Dalton Steiner also had an RBI. Warczok and Gabe Lewis both had doubles.
“In order to win sectional titles or anything beyond that, you have to be good, but you also have to be lucky,” Arkport head coach Scott Wood said. “Tonight, I think our luck ran out. In all honesty, everything they hit off the bat found the hole. It had eyes as they say and everything we hit seemed to be right at a person. It was unlucky, they were lucky and they get to go on.
“They were a good team. I won’t take anything away from them, but it’s just the luck of the draw. I’ve been there and I understand it.”
Gabe Lewis ended up with five strikeouts in the loss. He issued two free passes.
Arkport, which closes up shop at 16-6, loses five seniors to graduation, including Warczok, Steiner, Jordan Wood, Jake Theilen and Josh McDaniel.
“These five seniors played for a sectional title in 2014 so they had been there, they had since this type of pressure before,” Wood said. “This time around, we had a rough start to the year – maybe the worst start of my career. They came out of it strong and just kept soaring. I’m very proud of these guys, they’ve all done a great job.”
Genesee Valley, meanwhile, moves on to the NYS quarterfinals where it will meet up with Section VI Westfield on Saturday at Diethrick Park – home of the PGCBL Jamestown Jammers – in Jamestown. The first pitch has been scheduled for 4 p.m.

NEWARK – Austin Westrich did a little bit of everything for the Leopards, Tuesday night.
Westrich snapped off a three-hitter with four strikeouts, while also coming up big at the plate with a pair of hits, including a RBI triple in the second inning as Greece Odyssey secured a spot in the Section V, Class B1 finals with a 3-0 shutout over Hornell at Colburn Park in Newark.
Westridge also singled in the first and went on to account for the game-winning run.
“It was a very well-pitched game on both sides,” HHS head coach Joe Mauro, who coached his final game with the Red Raiders, said. “They made all the plays. But they also had some timely hits early in the game – that was the difference.
“Westridge really had his off-speed stuff going,” Mauro added on the Leopards’ senior hurler. “He really kept us off-balance for most of the night.”
Jake Plank, Joe Gibson and Max O’Rourke collected one hit each for Hornell. Jake Dunn, meanwhile, was charged with the loss on the hill. He struck out six and walked two, while giving up four hits over six innings of work.
The Red Raiders complete Mauro’s “Farewell Tour” with a record of 7-11. The team graduates three seniors – Plank, Andrew Doran and Tyler Parker.
“I appreciate the seniors and what they’ve done for the program over their fine careers,” Mauro said. “The team should be in pretty good shape to a make a good run next season. There are a lot of juniors coming back and we’ve gotten some good contributions out of the younger kids who came up along the way. I feel good about where I’m leaving them and what they’ll be able to do in the future.”
