CANISTEO, NY – Canisteo Village Mayor Monica Recktenwald announced that the village will be holding an open forum discussion on the upcoming budget tonight (May 21st) at the Canisteo Village Hall starting 6:30pm.
As many already know, the Village Board adopted a budget on April 9th, 2019 for the 2019-20 fiscal year. The new budget includes a tax increase of 19% over the previous year, with 53% of the $1,122,313 budget funded by real property taxes.
To put those numbers in perspective, a person that owns a dwelling in the village assessed at $100,000 will see his taxes go up $153 over the previous year. Taxes per $1000 of assessed value last year were $7.96, while this year that figure will jump to $9.49.
According to the village’s website, factors that are driving up taxes are state mandates such as the Centralizes Arraignment Plan, building issues at the Fire/Police/DPW, rising healthcare costs, infrastructure (water system), and aging vehicles.
The mayor and board members encourage anyone with any questions or complaints to attend tonight’s meeting.
