Village of Canisteo to Soon Have Bike Patrols

August 2, 2016

Canisteo, NY – Canisteo Police Sargent Kyle Amidon told the village board Monday night that as soon as his staff can get trained and certified bicycle patrols will be coming to the village. Amidon explained that currently only he is certified but with training from the Hornell Police Department other officers will also follow suit soon.

Also it was brought to the board’s attention that the intersection at Buffalo and Chestnut streets is unsafe due to the lack of a stop sign. After a suggestion by Amidon that the village could be liable for an accident there it was agreed upon to look into the matter further. They will be first seeking consultation from their insurance company and also from the DOT. A number of other intersections fall into this catagorie and will be looked into. Before any changes are made there will be a public hearing on the matter.

In an update on the fire district between the village of Canisteo, town of Canisteo, and Hartsville, mayor Bill Tucker said that progress has slowed due to the fact that Hartsville has had some shakeups in leadership. Also another sticking point according to Tucker is deciding which properties lay in which district and what fire company would be responsible in the event of a fire. He believes that wherever the actual house lies is what district they belong to but he still plans to seek confirmation on the matter.

Canisteo Greenwood BOE Sets Date for Formal Dedication of Living Sign

August 2, 2016

Canisteo, NY – The Canisteo Greenwood Board of Education set a date for a formal dedication of the revitalized Canisteo living sign at Monday night’s monthly meeting. School superintendent Jeremy Palotti said the tentative date will be Saturday, October 1st at the elementary school which will coincide with Homecoming Weekend. “There is a lot of positive energy surrounding this event and this will be a neat opportunity to bring the community together while a number of events are going on,” said Palotti.

Also on hand was Director of Facilities Head John Adams who gave the board an update on the progress of the living sign. “We have three trees that are graveyard dead,” said Adams, “And we have around ten trees that are struggling.” When the trees were planted the contractor told the board you can expect around a ten percent loss so as of now they are well under that figure. “Considering the fact that we had an extreme drought, I think things are looking pretty good.” Fortunately the cost of the dying trees does not fall on the school district as the contractor who planted them takes full responsibility for a full year.

In other news Adams reported that the soccer and football fields will be in fine shape for the start of fall sports and Palotti also told the board that the numbers for participation are solid.

August 1, 2016

Governor Anderw Cuomo announced today that there is now an official New York State, Watkins Glen license plate.
The governor says that the plate will be available beginning Thursday, August 4. The plate is the newest addition to DMV’s NASCAR custom plate series and features the WGI and NASCAR logos with a checkered flag background. The announcement coincides with the 2016 Cheez-It® 355 at the Glen – New York State’s only NASCAR race – and one of the highlights of Upstate tourism every summer. The Glen supports Governor Cuomo’s commitment to tourism, which recently reached a new record-high economic impact in New York State of $102 billion – an increase of 25 percent since 2010.

“The new Watkins Glen license plate celebrates New York’s strong partnership with this award-winning NASCAR racetrack,” Governor Cuomo said. “New York is proud to host this world-class event at the Glen, which attracts motorsport enthusiasts and drives tourism in the Southern Tier. I encourage racing fans to stop by the DMV exhibit on the Midway during this weekend’s events and take advantage of the services they have to offer.”
