Village of Canisteo Makes List of Being Susceptible To Fiscal Stress

ALBANY, NY – There is a new report out today from the State Comptroller’s Office, that says that the village of Canisteo, is not in fiscal stress, but is susceptible to it.

Canisteo Mayor Monica Recktenwald says this was due to a previous village board not submitting the End of Year Reports to the NYS Comptrollers Office for several years. Recktenwald says that the reports are now being filed, and that things are now improving.

Fatal Accident Victim’s Name Is Released

March 20, 2019

State Police say that the name of the driver killed in yesterday’s accident in Erwin, was Kayla Lehman, 23, Addison. Troopers say that Kayla went into the wrong lane and then went head on into an Addison School bus.

Troopers say she had two child passengers inside her vehicle, those two children were not hurt.

Congressman Tom Reed Visits Hornell Today

HORNELL, NY – Congressman Tom Reed (R, Corning) met with representatives from GST BOCES and CSI Workforce Training, in Hornell today. The topic of their discussion, was Hornell’s training opportunities for both high school students and older, who want to get CDL driver’s licenses. Reed seemed familiar with the tractor trailor that he took a short ride in on Thatcher Street. The congressman was able to point out how the parts on the front of the tractor trailer were made in both Jamestown and Falconer NY, both locations are a part of the congressional district.

Merger Between Steuben Consultants and Maple City Savings Bank

HORNELL, NY – We have news of a financial merger going on in Hornell: a merger between Steuben Consultants and Maple City Savings Bank. Maple City Savings Bank put out a statement, saying that this merger will help them continue to serve their customers from the current Steuben Consultants location at 70 Main Street, and that the merger will bring depth and resources that will help reassure clients, in getting advice and service.

“The time is right to provided added security, continuity and strength to our business and client relationships,” Mark Davidson, President of Steuben Consultant said.

Maple City Savings bank noted that “with this merger, MCSB will be able to broaden our product offerings for our customers.”

Both Maple City Savings Bank and Steuben Consultants said that this is happening, “to broaden and strengthen the financial offerings for both Steuben Consultants and MCSB.

The merger will go into effect on April 1st.

Fatal Accident In Erwin – Vehicle Strikes Addison School Bus

ADDISON, NY – State Police report that this morning at about 7:45am, troopers responded to a call about an accident on St-417 in the town of Erwin.
Here’s what State Police say happened:

A vehicle traveling eastbound on St-417, for an unknown reason, crossed over into the westbound lane and struck the Addison School Bus head on. The driver of the passenger vehicle was killed and the driver and the 10 students on board the school bus were uninjured. EMS is on scene have checked out all of the children involved in the accident and reported no injuries. All the children will be transported to Corning Guthrie Hospital for further medical checks.

St-417 is closed in that area and will be closed for several hours.
State Police say they will release more information when it becomes available.

New Steuben Co. Sheriff’s Officers Sworn In

Promotions/Swearing In/ Awards Ceremony

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on March 14, 2019, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office welcomed new officers, deputies, promoted a new captain, lieutenant and sergeant and recognized the service of a fifteen year employee.

Due to the recent retirement of Captain Christopher Hand, Lieutenant David C. Sutton, a sixteen year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office and veteran of the United States Marine Corps, was promoted and sworn in as Captain in front of family and friends last Thursday. Retired Captains Christopher Hand and Keith Barrett assisted in the ceremony. Newly promoted Captain Sutton then assisted in the promotional swearing in of his replacement, Sergeant Lauran Harrison to Lieutenant. Lieutenant Harrison is a twelve year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office and also a United States Marine Corps veteran. Lieutenant Harrison then assisted in the promotional swearing in of Officer Kris Kester to Sergeant. Sergeant Kester is an eleven year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office and frequent instructor in first aid and “Stop the Bleed”. Correction Officers Carissa Orcutt, Ragan Long, Zander Sharp, Jessie Trumbul, Zack Clark, Andrew Manley, Seth Maldanado, Gary Audinwood, John O’Connell were all sworn in at the ceremony.
Also sworn in was Deputy Micah Swarthout. Deputy Swarthout is a two year veteran of the Watkins Glen Police Department and the Bath Police Department and is married with two children.

Criminal Investigator Clark Brown was sworn in as a part time welfare fraud investigator, having retired from the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office.
School Resource Officer Kenneth Ruland was sworn in. Officer Ruland recently retired from the New York State Police and provides protective services to the Carder Elementary School in Corning, New York.

Special Patrol Officer Greg Wheeler, retired from NYS DOCCS, was also sworn in as a part time Court Security Officer.
The ceremony was capped off with a presentation honoring Dispatcher Kim Clark for her fifteen years of service wherein she was awarded a plaque and flag by the Deputies Association of the County of Steuben.

Louis P. Sherwood, of North Hornell

NORTH HORNELL-Louis P. Sherwood, 94, of Seneca Road, passed away Sunday (March 17, 2019) at his home surrounded by family.

Born in Wellsville, NY, October 23, 1924, a son of Clifford and Neva (Green) Sherwood, he had resided in North Hornell since 1986, prior to that he had resided in Whitesville for 34 years. He was a graduate of the Andover School District, Class of 1942. On November 27, 1947 he married the former Esther Fanton who preceded him in death on March 6, 2008.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a fervent patriot. He was a member of the Robert E. James Post of the American Legion in Whitesville throughout his adult life and participated in Whitesville’s Memorial Day Parade well into his 90’s. He was employed for 29 years at Air Preheater in Wellsville until his retirement in 1981.

“Louie,” as he was known to friends, grew up during the Great Depression and like his father, was skilled in the building trades and fine woodworking. He enjoyed home improvement projects and his services were sought after by friends and family. The many hours he spent in his woodworking shop yielded finely crafted furniture and toys for his grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He also enjoyed deer hunting.

He and Esther nurtured a close-knit family that remains so today. He liked nothing more than spending time with his family and witnessing their progress in life – and so it is a blessing that he spent his last hours on this Earth doing just that.

He is predeceased by his parents, his wife Esther, a daughter; Terry Louise Pritchard in 2008, a grandson; Duncan Geffers in 2018 and his brother; Stanley Sherwood. He is survived by 3 daughters; Sharon Ann (Pat) Ainsworth of New Jersey, Judy Lynn (Thomas) Flamini of Alfred Station and Cheryl Diane (Rob) Geffers of Tennessee, 2 sons; Lynn Louis (Melinda) Sherwood of Kentucky and Paul Duane (Karen) Sherwood of Kentucky, a son-in-law; Blair Pritchard of Hornell, 15 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, a brother; Wayne (Cassie) Sherwood of Florida, a sister-in-law; Dorothy Sherwood of Wellsville as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Longtime Secretary Carol Pascoe, Has Passed Away

NORTH HORNELL, NY – She was this radio station’s secretary for five decades. The first face you would see whenever you walked into the station. Longtime former secretary Carol Pascoe, has passed away, at Elderwood, at the age of 77.

Carol graduated from Hornell High School in 1959. She came to work at Wlea, shortly after graduating. Carol was longtime owner Kevin Doran’s right hand woman. She was with the station until her health gave in, in 2015, leaving the business, just before Kevin Doran’s death, in October, 2015.

To call Carol a “beyond average” employee, would be an understatement. Carol leaves behind her son David, his wife Kayla and their infant grandson, Henry. Carol Pascoe was a top notch secretary, a big friend, and will be greatly missed.
