June 20, 2024

The Hornell Steamers rallied from a six run deficit to earn a 12-8 victory over Horseheads in a game that was called due to lightning in the 7th inning. Hornell has won three straight and is 7-5 on the year.

Jake Ambrosio hit a bases clearing three-run double in the 1st to give the Hitmen the early 3-0 lead.

Jackson Legg (LSU Eunice) answered with a RBI double in the 2nd but Horseheads plated four more in the 2nd to build a 7-1 lead. Dominick Russ, Matt Procopio, and Ambrosio had RBI hits.

Wyatt Argentieri (Genesee CC) started a big night with a RBI single in the 2nd.

Hornell used a six-run 4th inning to take the lead. Devin Mersmann (Alfred State) hit a solo homer to left to get things started and three batters later Elijah Nichols (Arkansas) hit a three run homer to center. Cooper Dailey (Delgado CC) capped the big inning with a two-run single that dribbled through the infield.

In the 5th, Logan Hoyt (Alfred State) scored on a throwing error to make it 9-7.

Horseheads cut it to 9-8 in the 6th when Adam Birt was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Jeremy Yanow (Webster) got a big strikeout with the bases loaded to keep the lead.

In the bottom of the 6th, Hoyt connected on a big two-out double to left center. Argentieri followed with a RBI triple to right and scored on a throwing error on the play to make it 12-8.

As the 7th inning started, lightning entered the region and forced the game to be declared finished.

Argentieri was 3 for 3 with 2 RBI while Mersmann was 2 for 4. Danik Reed (Nunez CC) pitched three shutout innings of relief to earn the win. He allowed two hits and two walks while striking out three. Yanow allowed one hit and an unearned run in the 6th to earn the save.

The Steamers have Thursday off before heading to Dansville for a 5 p.m. battle with the Gliders.
