Update On The Odor, On The Streets Of North Hornell

April 14, 2025

There has been a strong odor on the streets of North Hornell, and to a much lesser extent, parts of Hornellsville and Hornell. It’s been a big problem, and one that really became very noticeable, 28 days ago. Hornell Mayor John Buckley attributes the odors to issues that HP Hood in Arkport, is having internally with their bio tower malfunctioning, for several weeks now. So as a solution to this problem, Hornell crews have been putting 25 gallons of a calcium nitrate chemical, called Total Ox, into the sewer system. This is something Rich Dunning at the Hornell Waste Water Treatment Plant, has been doing for over a week now, and Dunning notes, with much success.

WLEA News reached out to HP Hood spokesperson Lynne Bohan, who gave us the following statement: “HP Hood takes its role as a responsible member of the community very seriously. We are aware of recent reports concerning odors in the Hornell community and are committed to working collaboratively with our neighbors and officials of the City of Hornell to fully understand the nature and extent of the problem and what can be done to remedy it.”

We first reported on this issue, on March 24, here on Wlea.net.
