It’s officially tax season—and for once, that’s not all bad news. Thanks to the Working Families Tax Cut passed by House Republicans, hardworking Americans will be able to keep more of what they earn and finally get some real relief for hardworking taxpayers.
We simplified the tax code for 91% of taxpayers, making filing easier and putting more money back where it belongs—in your pocket. For families, that means paying no federal income taxes on the first $31,500 you earn. We locked in and expanded the historic doubled Standard Deduction, now set at $31,500 for families and $15,750 for individuals, so you keep more of your paycheck and spend less time buried in paperwork.
That simplicity matters. By locking in the expanded standard deduction, families will save 210 million hours every year that used to be wasted on tax paperwork—and $13 billion annually in compliance costs. And because these tax cuts are retroactive to 2025, the average refund is projected to grow by about $1,000, returning a total of $91 billionback to the American people this spring.
You’ll hear Democrats claim this tax cut helps billionaires. That’s simply not true. This is about working people—the restaurant server pulling a double shift, the factory worker on the line, the barber running a small shop, and the families doing everything they can to get ahead. This tax cut is focused on working and middle-class families and the small businesses that keep our communities going.
It puts families first by strengthening the Child Tax Credit and creating Trump Accounts for kids, giving parents a way to invest in their children’s future early on. This is the first time in American history that we are giving every American child regardless of their means an entrance into the investment market where they can grow wealth from birth without spending a dime.
We have sent a loud and clear message that we are putting American workers and American taxpayers first. And the economy is responding–wages are rising, and businesses are starting to invest in our country again—but we know there’s still more to do.
Reversing years of Washington’s reckless spending and job-killing regulations takes time but we are finally headed in the right direction. It is my number one priority in Washington to implement policies that will reduce costs of everyday necessities, increase access to affordable housing and lower energy costs through legislation such as my Energy Choice Act.
You work hard for your money. You deserve to keep more of it—and for the money government does spend, I will always fight to make sure it’s spent efficiently and in America’s best interests.
Unfortunately, we find ourselves in the middle of another government shutdown over Democrats’ refusal to fund the Department of Homeland Security.
Let me be clear: this is wrong, dangerous and puts America’s ability to protect our homeland at grave risk. We cannot play political games with our national security. Democrats have been on a quest to defund ICE and implement their sanctuary policies nationwide long before tensions rose in Minnesota. The truth is, the President, along with Senate Republicans and several Democrats were working together on a deal that would include reforms to ICE like requiring body cameras and enhanced training with the option to do more, but Democrats ultimately rejected it because they want to keep this controversy alive as a political issue.
It is my hope that when we return to Washington tomorrow, we will be able to negotiate a commonsense solution that prioritizes law and order and protects the safety of both law enforcement and the public. I’m going to do everything I can to get the government fully funded because I don’t believe in shutdowns. You deserve nothing less.
Sincerely,
Rep. Nicholas A. Langworthy
