Hornell Fireman Passes Paramedic Test

The City of Hornell would like to recognize Firefighter Joshua Szarek for earning his paramedic certification and passing the New York State and National Paramedic Board exams. Szarek is now a fully certified paramedic with the Hornell Fire Department (HFD).

Fire Chief Frank Brzozowski commended Szarek at the October Board of Public Safety meeting, stating, “Josh did a great job in paramedic school at Monroe Community College (MCC). The program is very rigorous, and Josh maintained high marks with positive feedback from the instructor throughout his training. The program has extensive classroom hours, as well as hands-on training with the emergency departments in hospitals, including Strong Memorial Hospital. It’s extensive training and testing, and Josh did a great job every step of the way.”

Szarek was appointed as a firefighter by the Board of Public Safety in August 2022 and also has experience with the North Hornell Fire Department as a firefighter. He also held credentials as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) prior to joining the department.

Mayor John Buckley also praised Szarek’s achievement, stating, “Josh has done a great job for our department and we are excited to see him advance his education and career as a paramedic. Being a paramedic is a significant achievement, requiring dedication and a great deal of training. I’m looking forward to Josh continuing his service to the department and the people of the Hornell community.”
