A Tale Of Two Immigration Policies

March 19, 2026

FROM CONGRESSWOMAN TENNEY (NY24) : Rep. Claudia Tenney yesterday applauded the House of Representatives’ passage of the Deporting Fraudsters Act, legislation to ensure that noncitizens who defraud the United States government or unlawfully receive taxpayer-funded benefits are inadmissible and deportable. This legislation passed the House by a vote of 231-186. The Deporting Fraudsters Act amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to explicitly clarify that aliens convicted of defrauding the United States or unlawfully receiving public benefits are subject to inadmissibility and deportation. Current law does not clearly define these offenses as grounds for removal, creating gaps that allow bad actors to exploit taxpayer-funded programs without facing appropriate consequences. This legislation closes those gaps and ensures individuals who steal benefits intended for American citizens are held accountable. Fraud involving programs such as Social Security and SNAP continues to harm vulnerable Americans, including seniors and working families, while undermining trust in critical public programs. “Anyone who comes to this country and steals from American taxpayers should not be allowed to stay here,” said Congresswoman Claudia Tenney. “When illegal aliens defraud the federal government or steal taxpayer-funded benefits, deportation should be the consequence. We have seen how widespread and organized these fraud schemes can become when oversight fails, and the American people deserve accountability. The Deporting Fraudsters Act closes dangerous loopholes, protects taxpayer dollars, and ensures that those who exploit our system are removed. This bill puts American citizens and legal residents first.”

FROM GOVERNOR KATHY HOCHUL (D, NY): “Earlier this month, I met with Tom Homan to make an appeal for ICE and federal law enforcement to focus on real threats and to stop the attacks on law-abiding people who call New York home. As part of this meeting I urged the release of Dylan Lopez Contreras, a young public school student who was unjustly taken by federal immigration agents last year. Today, after ten long, painful months in ICE detention, Dylan is finally being reunited with his family. While I am relieved that Dylan has been released, we cannot stop here. The federal government must work with New York to return all those who have been wrongfully taken and separated from their families.”
