After Much Political Pushback, Dems Stall, On Changing Special Election Rules

February 11, 2025

Corning Republican Assemblyman Phil Palmesano and Canisteo Republican Joe Sempolinski were at a noontime GOP press conference Monday at the state capital. There, Republicans pushed back against Democrat Governor Kathy Hochul and State Senate and Assembly Dems who were scheduled to pass a new law at 2pm Monday, a new law to delay a special election to replace GOP Congresswoman Elise Stefanik in Eastern New York. Then when 2:00 came along, Democrats announced that the bill was not going anywhere.

Republicans say the attempts to make changes to the special election laws are indefensible. Republicans also claimed the governor declares special elections quickly when it’s likely that a Democrat will win.
