Alfred Village 2023 Community Meeting

September 20, 2023

ALFRED, NY – At the community meeting in Alfred Tuesday night, it was announced that the traffic light on Main and Pine won’t be back until December. The traffic light was taken down for bridge work. Village Mayor Jim Ninos, Deputy Mayor Peter McClain, Town Supervisor Dan Acton and other officials were on hand. Supervisor Dan Acton said there are two solar projects. One on Jericho Hill and one on McAndrews Road. Also, Police Chief Paul Griffith says there are more students and less cops. Griffith also says there are more DWAI arrests since legalization of marijauna. It was also reported by the fire dept that there is a large increase in ambulance calls.

There was much talk about sidewalk issues, and local businessman/Alfred resident Jason Rodd said he would be willing to loan the village two pieces of equipment for repairing sidewalks in Alfred.

Alfred State College President Steve Mauro talked about how positive things went in his first summer in Alfred. He says there are 180 more students this year. Alfred University President Mark Zupan said there were about 120 more students there largely because of other schools closing. Zupan also says there will be a meeting on Thursday about the Saxon Hill project.

Then Jim Weaver from the fire department talked about how too many students are over using ambulances to go to the hospital when it could have waited until the morning for a doctor.
