Assembly Members Byrnes, Palmesano, Giglio, Tell NYS Dems To Fix Bail Rules

January 15, 2020

Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes:
“Less than three weeks after this law has taken effect, we already have seen the tragic ramifications it has had on so many families in our state,” Byrnes said after the event. “Today we were joined by Shelia Harris, whose niece was the victim of a Christmas Eve tragedy in which an undocumented, unlicensed driver struck and killed the mother of three children and fled the scene of the crime. Within hours of his arrest, he was released from custody pending his criminal trial. “This is just one of countless examples throughout the state where this law has endangered law-abiding New Yorkers. As I have stated before, my prior service as a prosecutor and judge has instilled in me the duty to fight for the rule of law and protect our communities. I will continue to urge my colleagues to repeal this law and put our safety ahead of Democrat party politics.”

Assemblyman Joe Giglio:
“When this was passed, the governor said, ‘well, New Jersey did it and nothing happened there.’ The governor said, ‘the world didn’t end in New Jersey,’ (but) it ended here, it ended right here for these people (Giglio was referring to victim’s family members, standing near the podium). That’s what’s aggravating, that’s what breaks your heart.”
