Avian Flu Hits Seneca Lake, But None So Far Here In Steuben County

March 12, 2026

Numerous media outlets have reported that birds have been found dead in the Seneca Lake area. The D.E.C. says, the cause of death is bird flu. Is it a problem in Steuben County? County Public Health Spokeswoman Malia Vandenberg says, so far, no, but it never hurts to be careful. “The best way for folks to stay safe and to avoid the Avian Flu is to avoid touching sick or dead birds, to keep your pets away from them and to wash your hands if you’ve been outdoors,” VanDenburg noted.
