Barbara Crothers Lake, M.D., formerly of North Hornell

HORNELL-Barbara Crothers Lake, M.D., 83, formerly of Cleveland Avenue, and a resident of Elderwood at Hornell, passed away Wednesday morning (Aug. 2, 2017) at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell, after a short illness.

Born in Upland, Pa. on Aug. 26, 1933, she was a daughter of the late George and Llewellyn (Sawyer) Crothers. She was married in Lewisburg, Pa. to Robert Emil Lake, who predeceased her in February of 1976. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her sister, Llewellyn Bennett and her brother, George Crothers.

A graduate of Ridley Park High School in Pennsylvania, Barbara also graduated from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa. and the Women’s Medical College in Philadelphia, Pa.; she completed her residency in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital also in Philadelphia.

She resided in Hornell most of her adult life where she had her own pediatric practice and also served as a physician for schools throughout Steuben County. Before she retired she was affiliated with Craig Development Center in Sonyea.

Barbara was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Hornell and formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Hornell Children’s Home.

After her retirement, she became a “full time, stay at home grandmother.” She cherished the time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, and loved attending all of their activities. Barbara also enjoyed spending time each summer at Rehoboth Beach in Delaware.

Her loving family includes her two children, Susan (Jeffrey) Mitchell of Millerton, Pa. and Robert Vincent (Gretchen) Lake of Liberty, Pa.; her four grandchildren, Jessica (Mikhail) Leddy of Ephrata, Pa. and Elizabeth Mitchell (Kyle VanGorder) of Mansfield, Pa., and Robert Lake and Arden Lake both of Liberty, Pa.; also her niece, Josephine “Jo” (Douglas) Barnard of Hornell; her two nephews, Ross Bennett of Belleville, N.J. and Edward (Beverly) Bennett of Birmingham, Ala.; as well as her great nephew, Nash Bennett of Belleville, N.J.

The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in Hornell is honored to serve the family of Barbara Crothers Lake, M.D.

There were no calling hours. A private funeral and committal service was held at the convenience of her family at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell; the Rev. Katherine Griffis officiated. Interment followed at Rural Cemetery in Hornell.
