Lillian Howe
ARKPORT-Lillian C. “Lil” Howe, 78, of Lisman Lane, passed away Thursday evening (Nov. 7, 2013) at Highland Hospital in Rochester.
Born in Hornell on Aug. 8, 1935, she was a daughter of the late John and Anna Szutowycz Cheresnowsky. On Nov. 3, 1956, she was married at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell to Ralph “Bud” Howe, who predeceased her on June 26, 2010 after nearly 54 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her six brothers, Michael, Joseph, twins, George and Harry Cheresnowsky and Peter and Theodore Cherron; also her four sisters, Mary Spak, Elizabeth “Betty” Satariano, Mildred Gates and Helen Cheresnowsky.
A graduate of Hornell High School, Lil has resided in Arkport for the past 50 years.
She was employed for many years as a Public Health Nurse for Steuben County retiring about 18 years ago.
Lil was a communicant of St. Ignatius Loyola Church and St. Ann’s Church in Hornell and most recently at St. Mary’s Church in Canaseraga. She formerly volunteered her time as a Girl Scout Troop Leader and was also a member of the Arkport Historical Society.
A an avid gardener, she also loved to Polka and enjoyed watching Lawrence Welk and baking cookies, which she often would send to her family in Alaska.
She will be remembered most of all for her smile and laugh and for the love and affection that she had for her family and friends and especially for anyone’s babies.
Her loving family includes her three children, Valerie (Larry) McCloskey of Saugerties, Joseph (Darla) Howe of Juneau, Alaska and Barbara (Jack) Cook of Arkport; her two grandchildren that she adored, Kyle and Abby Cook; also her many nieces, nephews and cousins. Lil was very close to her “little sister” Barbara Jean Hurd and she dearly loved her caregiver, Kim Campbell.
Calling hours are from 1-3 and 6-9 p.m. Friday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to meet her family at St. Mary’s Church in Canaseraga where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday. Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
