Bernice L. Ordway, of Canisteo

Canisteo-Bernice L. Ordway, 98, of 67 Russell Street, passed away peacefully on Sunday (July 27, 2014) at her home of natural causes after living a long and full life.

Born on the family farm in Greenwood , November 27, 1915, she was the daughter of John and Elsie York Rogers. She had been a lifelong resident of Greenwood and Canisteo. Bernice was a graduate of Greenwood Central School, class of 1933, as well as the former Hornell Business School. She had been employed as a clerk and bookkeeper for the GLF Store and later Agway in Canisteo for 35 years prior to her retirement in 1978.

She was a 67 year member of the First Presbyterian Church in Canisteo and had served as deacon and former treasurer of the Presbyterian Guild. She was an active member of RSVP, and had volunteered at both Bethesda Community Hospital, and St. James Mercy Hospital as well as Mercy Care from 1981 until 2001. She had also served as treasurer for the Canisteo Council of Churches.

Bernice and her husband Robert enjoyed traveling ; especially visiting the Panama Canal, a cruise to Alaska, a train trip across all of Canada, Texas, Las Vegas and the wonderful time spent in Florida. They both treasured the time they spent at Keuka Lake. She enjoyed knitting, especially making special gifts for family and friends and working crossword puzzles. Every morning, Bernice could be found at the local coffee shop sharing news with her many lady friends in Canisteo, and of course, Friday night fish fries. And who could forget, her hosting some very spirited games of euchre at her home.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Robert in 1998, her sister Gertrude Cable, her step-daughter, Connie Weiler and her son Ronald Hurd in 2013.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol Houghtaling of Texas, her step-son, Robert Ordway of Holland Patent, her brother –in-law, Joe( Doris ) Ordway of Canisteo, as well as several grand children, great grandchildren, and step grandchildren. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Renee Nolton, Bernice’s long time caregiver.

Honoring Bernice’s wishes, the family will not be observing calling hours. A private family funeral service will be held at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home in Canisteo with Rev. Norma Bond officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canisteo.
