Buckley: Hydrant Flushing/Water Update

September 13, 2021

We have received multiple reports of residents throughout the City experiencing discolored water in the past few weeks. In some cases, the discoloration comes and goes. In other cases, it is more consistent with residents in some parts of the city experiencing this while others are not, making the problem a challenge to diagnose and resolve. Our Chief Water Plant Operator and our DPW Superintendent have been working diligently to try and resolve this issue. They have made a number of adjustments and continue to work to resolve the matter as quickly as possible. We understand the concern and frustration of residents and want to assure you this matter is our top priority as we continue working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

We began a system wide flush beginning on Saturday, September 11th as outlined below. The flushing of hydrants will cause a temporary discoloration of water.

The City of Hornell will be flushing hydrants starting Saturday, September 11th and continuing throughout the week. Flushing will begin Saturday with Airport Rd., Industrial Park Rd., and Seneca Rd. North, continue Sunday in the Village of North Hornell, Monday in the northern portion of the City beginning with the Adsit Street and Madison Avenue areas. Crews will continue working their way south through the city as the week progresses, with all flushing expected to be completed by Friday night.

Flushing will take place between the hours of 11:00 pm and 7:00 am. Residents are encouraged to refrain from washing clothes during flushing hours and to check their water for discoloration before use. If you experience discolored water, let the cold water run until it clears. This does NOT require a boil water advisory as the water is safe for use.
We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your cooperation as we work to resolve this matter.
