The Canisteo-Greenwood school district’s staff health insurance went up, unexpectedly, by a million dollars this spring. School officials say that the insurance company did not notify the CG school board in time, and as such, the school district was faced with two choices: either raise taxes after promising that taxes would not be going up, or the school could make cuts.
The school board decided to make several job cuts and to also not hire some new employees who were scheduled to be hired. This was done to avoid raising taxes at the last minute, back in May. Canisteo-Greenwood School Board President Mike Nisbet told the insurance representatives at the Monday night BOE meeting, “this cannot happen again.”
