Canisteo Police Name Their New K9 After The Late Marine Lance Corporal Zach Smith

February 18, 2025

The Canisteo Police Department would like to welcome their newest Officer, K9 Smitty. “Smitty” is named in Honor of Zachary D. Smith of Hornell, who lost his life fighting for our country in Afghanistan.
Sergeant Giglio will be Smitty’s handler and they will begin training together. Smitty will be a big asset to the Canisteo Police Department specializing in Narcotics Detection, Tracking and Personal Protection. It will be nice to have a K9 back on the force as we all having been missing Dex and his contributions to the Department and the community.
Lastly, this could not have happened without the support of the Village Board and more importantly the generous people and businesses that donated to this cause to make this happen.
– Pete and Lisa Wall
– Ken’s Collision
– Hubertus Service Station
– Butler Excavating and Concrete/City View
– Giglio’s Plumbing Heating & Cooling
– Bradley’s Supply
– Deputies Association of County of Steuben
– Universal Builders, Bob and Larry
And a huge thank you to UPSTATE K9 for providing an amazing dog again!
