Canisteo Residents Requesting 24 Hour Police Presence in Community

November 12th, 2017

CANISTEO, NY – Katrina Oliverio, Canisteo village resident and recently appointed Village Clerk, attended the monthly Town Hall meeting last evening and stated her case for requesting that the Canisteo PD operate 24/7.

Oliverio was not alone as several people in attendance agreed with her and shared similar stories of criminal behavior near their residences. All were in agreement now that the problem is response time. Once the Canisteo PD closes calls are funneled to 911 and either a sheriff or trooper is dispatched and it could be as long as an hour before they arrive on the scene. In most cases the perpetrator could be long gone by then.

After calling the Canisteo Police Dept. concerning their hours of operation, Police Chief Kyle Amidon explained that for security and safety reasons that information is not made public. However, what he could reveal is that the hours vary, with the only requirement that they are on call 96 out of 168 hours per week.

One big drawback that was on some of the board members minds was the added cost to support the initiative and whether that would be a viable solution. One town board member questioned whether adding the additional hours would even solve a situation such as Oliverio encountered.

Town Supervisor Steve Weed concluded the discussion by saying he has been in deep discussions with the village Mayor and this is definitely something that will be considered in the future, as long as it’s not back breaking in costs. “It’s coming,” continued Weed, “I don’t know when it’s coming, but it’s definitely coming.”
