Town of Hornellsville News

November 15th, 2017

     Deputy Supervisor Dan Broughton

ARKPORT, NY – The Town of Hornellsville held a Public Hearing Tuesday evening and then passed heir 2018 budget. For next year, they are looking at a total budget of 1,930,485. Of that, $652,000 is to be recouped as revenue while $1,216,000 will be raised by taxes. They will also allocate $63,000 in the unexpected fund balance account. According to Deputy Supervisor Dan Broughton, this works out to be a 1% tax increase. Put into dollars and cents, if you own a $100,000 dwelling, your taxes will go up $30.

Joe Dick, Planning Board head, told the board that Cy’s Shurefine owner Larry Jones will be retiring off the panel in the near future and a replacement is being sought. Dick said he is currently only running with 3 members and decision making is getting tough. Dave Wyre, Parts Manager at Simmons Rockwell, will take over one of the two open positions.

As soon as he board seats 5 again, Dick said they would like to sit down and redo the fee structure for building permits, which at the moment are relatively low compared to other communities.

Dick also reported that the DEC is still delaying construction of the new Nissan Dealership adjacent to Simmons Rockwell because of years of contamination in the adjacent creek by a private contractor. Dick, along with Simmons Rockwell, hopes the matter will be resolved in the very near future.

And finally, the board passed a resolution to have the roof replaced on the Hornellsville Town Hall building. According to board member Bob Mauro, they had budgeted $13,000 for the project months back, and just received a low bid of $8,000 with materials. “We would like to get it taken care of as soon as possible,” said Mauro, “The weather is changing fast and our window of opportunity to get this done before he bad stuff hits is getting shorter.”

Canisteo-Greenwood to Replace Cafeteria Floor

December 12, 2016

CANISTEO, NY – The Canisteo-Greenwood Board of Education heard a proposal Monday night from Labella architect Alton Ainslie about replacing the floor in the Elementary/Middle school cafeteria. Every year Albany allots school districts $100,000 in aid specifically for a capital outlay project.

This year the board decided to use the money to replace a cafeteria floor. The old tile floor is outdated, can become very slippery, and is covering up plumbing that is not up to code standards. The project entails replacing it with Quarry tile. Quarry tile is extensively used for floors where a very durable material is required. It can be used either indoors or outdoors.

Also after the old floor is tore up, plumbing underneath that is decades old will be replaced and much needed grease trap will be installed.
A big question by the board is what happens once the old floor is removed and they realize that more needs to be done running in excess of the $100,000 of aid. In that case the school district would be responsible and should plan ahead in the upcoming school budget. If everything goes on schedule, the construction could begin this summer.

Also the school district is currently undertaking rapid response planning. Under this program, the school works with police, fire, ambulance, and rescue teams in allowing them to tie in with all school surveillance cameras, phones, and other resources to aid in a speedy resolution in case of a tragedy. According to Palotti the web based program is very affordable and offed by Boces.
