Shirley Ferris, of Hornell

HORNELL, NY-Shirley M. Ferris, 76, of Mays Ave., passed away Wednesday morning (April 9, 2014) at Highland Hospital in Rochester.

Born in Rochester on April 27, 1937 she was a daughter of the late Dean and Evelyn Grohs McManis. On December 26, 1959 she was married at the West Avenue Methodist Church in Rochester to Rev. E. Robert Ferris, Jr. who predeceased her on Dec. 8, 2001 after 42 years of marriage.

A graduate of Rush-Henrietta Central School, Shirley completed under graduate studies at SUNY at Geneseo in 1958 and received her master’s degree from Alfred University in 1986.

Shirley and her family came to Hornell in 1979 when her husband became pastor of the former Spencer United Methodist Church on Canisteo St. After many years of substitute teaching for several school districts, she taught at the former St. Ann’s School in Hornell from 1985-1986. In 1986 she began her teaching career, of mainly fourth grade students, with the Hornell City School District at the Intermediate School, retiring in 2001.

She devoted much of her life to her husband’s ministry as well as to her children. Shirley was presently a member of the Hornell United Methodist Church as well as Sally Marquis, which is affiliated with the church. She was active in community affairs including, the Hornell Rotary Club where she served on the Board of Directors and became a Paul Harris Fellow, she was involved with Faith In Action, was a former member of the Board of Directors of Hornell Arts Council, a supporter of the Hornell Area Wind Ensemble, a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and she also served as an Advocate for Arc of Steuben.

Shirley enjoyed quilting as well as attending concerts, musicals and plays. She especially liked attending productions at the Rochester Broadway Theater League (RBTL) and at the GEVA Theater and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) where she was an annual subscriber.

Her loving family includes her two daughters, Susanna Ferris of Rochester and Nancy (Michael) Postilli of Hilton; her two sons, Timothy (Tracey) Ferris of Penfield and Jeremy Ferris of Hornell; her four grandchildren, Rachael and Jacob Ferris, Julia and Emma Postilli; her great-grandson, Ryan Ferris; her sister, Nancy (Al) Sweet of Rush; her brother, Alan McManis (Jay Rice) of Rush; her sister-in-law, Virginia (John) Williams of Plant City, Fla.; also her nieces, nephews and cousins.

The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in Hornell is honored to serve the family of Shirley M. Ferris.

Relatives and friends are invited to meet her family at the Rush United Methodist Church, 6200 Rush-Lima Road where her funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday (April 15, 2014), with the Rev. Roger Reed officiating. Committal services and interment will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery, Rush.

Calvin Milliner, Sr., of Hornell

Calvin Milliner, Sr., of Hornell

HORNELL, NY-Calvin M. Milliner, Sr. 89, passed away peacefully Thursday morning April 10, 2014), in the presence of his loving family, at his home on North Main St.

Born in Hartford, Ct. on February 17, 1925 he was a son of the late Dewey and Martha Moss Milliner. Besides his parents he was also predeceased by his two brothers, Arthur and Joseph Milliner; his four sisters, Lula Mae Williams, Rose Faniel, Dorothy Curry and Marilyn “Ruth” Gilmore; his granddaughter, Jacqueline Milliner.

A veteran of World War II, Calvin proudly served his country with the U.S. Army from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1946. He was stationed in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe and was awarded the Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon.

Calvin has resided in Hornell since 1947 and began his employment with the former Erie Railroad at the Freight House in Hornell and eventually retired 37 years later as a dispatcher for Conrail.

He was a member and Past Commander of the Cpl. J.J. Mooney V.F.W. Post No. 2250, a member of the Arthur Cunningham American Legion Post No. 440 in Hornell and the Arkport Memorial American Legion Post No. 1248. He was recognized by the Veterans Administration for over 300 hours volunteer service to veterans and in 2007 we was awarded a key to the City of Hornell.

Calvin, who was fluent in the German language, enjoyed sports, doing crossword puzzles and cooking. He would often volunteer to cook for area charities for their fund raising events.

He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to sing; he was well known for his rendition of Nat King Cole’s song Route 66.

His loving family includes his wife of 67 years the former Mary E. Gilmore, who he married in Hartford, Ct. on November 2, 1946; his brother, William J. (Vera) Millner of Beltsville, Md.; his eight children, Rodney Earl Milliner of Georgia, Calvin M. Milliner, Jr. of Jamestown, Dennis Edward Milliner of Hornell, Ellen (Frank) Nelson of Hornell, Theresa M. Milliner of Hornell, Martha A. Milliner (Miriam “Mimi” Tannenbaum) of Daegu, Korea, Joseph G. Milliner of Hornell and Karen D. Milliner of Green Island, N.Y.; his 17 grandchildren, Alan Lester, Matthew (Teiya) Milliner, Icelynn Milliner, Shawn and Joseph Clemons, Monti Sell, Farrell (Mike) Monaghan, Phillip and Frank Nelson, Jr., Sade Nelson, Marjoe (Rebecca) Milliner, Thera Berry, Quentin Walker, Sarah Milliner, Aaron Milliner, Erica (Richard II) Gardner and Precious Trotter; his many great and great-great-grandchildren; also his nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by his special niece, Emah (Dude) Breitbarth, Christine Wheeler and Wannetta Trotter, who he considered as daughters.

Bruce Dries, formerly of Arkport

Bruce Dries, formerly of Arkport

Bruce T. Dries, 59, of Rochester, NY, formerly of Arkport, died Thursday (April 3, 2014, at Rochester General Hospital, following a brief illness.

Born in Hornell on June 21, 1954, he was the son of Gerald & Sara (Williams) Dries.

Bruce grew up in Arkport and attended Arkport Central School. He left high school to join the US Marine Corp, serving his country for 4 years. While in the Marines, he obtained his GED Certification.

Following his discharge from the Marines, Bruce resided for several years in Pennsylvania before returning to Arkport where he lived for about 10 years. He has resided in Rochester for the past 11 years.

Bruce was a former member of Our Lady of the Valley parish and a communicant ofSt. Ann’s Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Dries who died in 2003.

Surviving are his girlfriend, Debra Gomez with whom he resided; his daughter, Brittany Dries-Patterson of Virginia; 2 sons, Nicholas Dries of Clearwater, FL and Timothy Dries, a member of the US Army, stationed in Colorado and is deployed in Afghanistan; his mother, Sara Dries of Arkport; 2 brothers, David Dries of Shoemakersville and Ed (Fiama) Dries of Italy, PA; 1 sister, Susan (Lewis) Woodvine of Arkport; several aunts, uncles, nieces & nephews.

The family of Bruce T. Dries will receive friends on Monday from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY, where a Memorial Service will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 6:00 PM with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Final interment will be in the Bath National Cemetery.

In honor of Bruce’s service to his country as a member of the US Army, the American Flag at the Dagon Funeral Home will be flown at half-staff.

Thomas Caple, of Canisteo

Thomas Caple, of Canisteo

Thomas D. Caple, 89, of 5084 Purdy Creek Road, passed away Sunday (April 6, 2014) at the Elcor Nursing Home in Horseheads. Born in Canisteo, July 22, 1924, he was the son of Howard and Lucy Douglass Armstrong. At age two, he went to live with William and Ruth Caple who later became his adopted parents.

Tom was a graduate of Canisteo Central School, Class of 1940 and earned his associates degree from Oswego State University. He lived his entire lifetime in the Canisteo area and resided in Hartsville for the past 66 years. He had served as Hartsville Town Supervisor, Councilman, and was Town Justice for several years. Tom spent his entire life in the automotive business. He was employed at the former Russ Davis Motor Sales in Hornell as parts manager, and in the sales department at the former Wellsville Lincoln Mercury dealership. He owned and operated Caple Selected Autos Inc. in Canisteo and later operated the business from his home in Hartsville. Tom was proud to have taught Auto mechanics at BOCES for 3 years. Tom proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during WW-2 from 1943-1946. He was also a member of the Hartsville Community Church.

He was a member of Morning Star Lodge #65 F&AM in Canisteo and was recently honored with a 50 year membership..

He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Robert Armstrong and James Cline, and a grandson Seth Moat.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Combs Caple to whom he was married July 26, 1947, Four daughters, Carla (Charles) Agonito of Waterloo, Elizabeth (Michael) Swisko of Maine, Marsha (James) Bird of Florida and Marie (John) Bassett of Kentucky, 4 grandchildren, 2 nieces.

Donald Potter, of Canisteo

Donald Potter, of Canisteo

Canisteo, NY – Well known and respected Canisteo businessman, Donald B. Potter, 67, of 20 Elm Street, passed away peacefully on Sunday (April 6, 2014) at his home.

Born in Wellsville, October 14, 1946, the son of John and Mildred Herke Potter, he was a graduate of Scio Central School, Class of 1964 where he was a star athlete. He served his country as a member of the United States Air Force during the Viet Nam Era from 1964-1968.

From 1971 until 2009, Don owned and operated the Zenith Sales and Service in Canisteo. He was a member of the Canisteo American Legion Post, a former member of the Hornell Moose Lodge and the Hornell Lodge of Elks. Don coached the Grasshopper league , as well as little league and Babe Ruth League. He had served as fire commissioner for the Canisteo Fire Department, and as sports chairman for the Hornell Moose Lodge sports league. Don enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and will be remembered as a good friend to many and a loving relative. His optimistic attitude was helpful to other veterans who were undergoing cancer treatment.

He was predeceased by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Broughton Potter to whom he was married on October 4, 1969, his daughter, Kristin (Roger) Leete of Rochester, and his son, Michael (Julie) Potter of Buffalo, his grandchildren, Alex Leete and John Potter, his sisters, Nancy Haberer of Wellsville, and Sheila (Robert) Linnecke of Scio, his brother, Gary (Sheila) Potter of Arcade, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Father Jerry Moynihan

The body of Father Jerry Moynihan will lie in state Wednesday from 4 until 7pm at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Flower City Park in Rochester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at the cathedral Thursday following an opportunity for people to pay last respects from 9 to 10:30am.

Father Moynihan died last Friday at the age of 74. He had been pastor at St. Ignatius Church and chaplain at St. James Hospital before being transferred to Elmira. A Memorial Mass will be offered Friday April 11th at St. Ann’s in Hornell for Father Moynihan.

Margaret Karns, formerly of Arkport

Hornell, NY – Margaret M. Karns, 99, formerly of 22 East Ave., Arkport died Friday afternoon (april 4, 2014) at Hornell Gardens, where she had resided for the past five years.

Born in Dansville, NY, on March 15, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Clara VanDurme. She was a graduate of Dansville Central School and the Federal Commercial School of Hornell, NY.

In 1939, she was married to Earl S. Karns who died on March 27, 1998. She, along with her husband, owned & operated Karns’ Repair Shop in Arkport.

In addition to her husband and parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her son, John Karns; 4 brothers, John VanDurme, Raymond VanDurme, Louis VanDurme and Nick VanDurme; 2 sisters, Mary Hurlburt and Alice Randall; her son-in-law, Douglas FitzMaurice; her step-son-in-law, Don Roach; along with several in-laws

Surviving are four daughters, Sandra (Ralph) Rice of Addison, Nancy FitzMaurice of Virginia, Peggy Williams of Fremont, and Susan (William) Wyant of Waterloo, NY; one son, James (Linda) Karns of Wellsville; 1 step daughter, Patricia Roach; 1 sister, Loretta Daniels of Dansville; 3 brothers, Richard VanDurme, Larry VanDurme, Phil VanDurme, all of Dansville; her daughter-in-law, Roma Karns of Ontario, NY; several in-laws, grandchildren; great-grandchildren great-great-grandchildren; nieces & nephews.

There will be no prior calling hours. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday (April 10, 2014) at10:30 AM at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell. Burial will be in Arkport Cemetery.

Florence Fuller, of Hornell

Hornell, NY – Florence Louise Fuller, 75, passed away at her home following a short illness. Her death had been expected and was no surprise to the family and friends that surrounded her in her last moments. Florence was known to almost everyone in her community.

Born in Dansville, August 17, 1938, the daughter of William and Lillian Chesbro Paulman, she had resided in the Hornell area most of her life.

She had been employed for over 30 years as a teacher’s aide for the Hornell School District, a job she truly enjoyed. Florence and her husband Donald had been foster parents for over 25 years, caring for over 67 children. The Fuller’s were the emergency placement home for Steuben County, taking responsibility for many children in emergency situations. Florence was a member of Hillside Baptist Church.

She was predeceased by her parents, and her son, Donald B. Fuller.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Fuller, to whom she was married September 7, 1955, three daughters, Bonnie (Darryl) Barth of North Carolina, Joy (Mitch) Weaver of Hornell and Robin (Chris) Fuller-Jones of North Carolina, three sons, Randy (Patti) Fuller of North Carolina, Brion Fuller of Hornell and Daniel (Tina) Fuller of Pennsylvania, her sister, Rebecca Stevens of Dansville and her brother, Robert (Marge)Paulman of Dansville, many grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.

Richard Dugo, formerly of Hornell

Sun City, AZ – Richard Carl Dugo, 67, of Sun City, Arizona, formerly of Hornell, passed away Friday (December 13, 2013) following a long illness.

He was born August 4, 1946 in Hornell, NY to Joseph and Madeline (Franzone) Dugo who preceded him in death.

Richard grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1965). He moved to Arizona in 1992 where he met and married his wife, Susan. They spent over 20 wonderful years together traveling and golfing prior to his succumbing to illness.

He leaves behind his best friend and wife, Susan, his beloved daughter Kimberly Dugo of Arizona; his wonderful sister Alberta (Jon) Cleveland of Hornell and their daughter, Pamela (Eric) Mendel of Geneseo, NY.

The family of Richard Carl Dugo will receive friends on Saturday (March 5, 2014) from 10:30 AM until 11:30 AM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY. A Memorial Service will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 11:30 AM with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Final interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetetry

David Studley, of Almond

Almond, NY – David J. Studley, 61, of 13 Main St., died Monday afternoon (March 31, 2014) at his home, following a long illness.

Born in North Hornell on April 15, 1952, he was the son of Richard & Eileen (Alexander) Studley.

Dave grew up in Almond and attended Alfred-Almond Central School. He was a veteran of the US Navy, serving his country from 1969-1971 and again from 1973-1975. While in the US Navy, he was stationed in Naples, Italy running supplies to Navy ships in the Mediterranean Sea.

He worked for a time on the “rail gangs” at the former Erie Lackawanna Railroad and Conrail; as an electrician at Alfred University; and for Steuben County Buildings & Grounds. For nearly 40 years Dave was employed as a truck driver for several local businesses including Crowley’s Dairy, Covered Wagon, Southern Tier Concrete, Giles Trucking, Wegmans Express and AL Blades.

Dave was a life member & past commander of Hornell AMVETS where he served as a representative for Veterans Association of Volunteer Services. He was also a former member of the Arkport American Legion and the Hornell Eagles Club.

For many years, Dave enjoyed bowling, golfing and hunting. He also was a NASCAR fan and enjoyed camping.

He is married to the former Laurel Woolgar-Turner who survives. Also surviving are 1 daughter, Rebecca (Barb Collette) Studley of Popular Bluff, MO; 1 son, Michael (Brittany) Studley of Almond; 3 step-sons, Thomas (Tonya) Turner of Hornell, Jason (Michelle Magallanes) Turner of Almond and Sean (Jenalee) Turner of Howard; 1 sister, Cheryl McDaniel of Almond; 12 grandchildren, Tom IV, Joshua, Zachary, Chloe, Kayla, Kade, Nicholas, Alyssa, Carson, Emmy, Adelaide & Meredith; several nieces & nephews.

The family of David J. Studley will receive friends on Saturday from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY where funeral & committal services with full military honors will be held on Sunday at 3:00 PM with Pastor Steve Dygert officiating. Burial will be in the Bath National Cemetery, Bath, NY.

Mary Margaret Colomaio, of Hornell

Mary Margaret Colomaio, of Hornell

HORNELL, NY -Mary Margaret Quigley Colomaio, 80, died early Sunday morning (April 6, 2014) at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell.

Born in Salamanca, N.Y. on December 8, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Pauline Elsen Quigley. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her six brothers, Robert, William, Lawrence, Patrick, John “Jack” and Michael Quigley; her sister, Anne Stowell; her grandson, Robert M. Colomaio and her son-in-law, Jeffery Briggs.

A graduate of Salamanca High School, class of 1951, Mary received her nursing diploma from St. James Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Hornell in 1954. She retired in 1995 after 40 years of service at St. James Mercy Hospital Maternity Department. She helped bring countless babies into the world. Mary will be sadly missed and fondly remembered as an “old school registered nurse.”

Mary enjoyed reading and her greatest pride and joy were her grandchildren. She enjoyed attending their numerous activities along with the many holiday and birthday celebrations. Family was the most important thing to Mary.

A member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish, she was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church and she enjoyed living on Pardee Street in Hornell for over 50 years. Mary was well known to all of the children in the neighborhood and always had a bowl of chocolate ready, “if you can say it you can have it”. One of her greatest thrills was riding in her nephew and godchild, Sean Quigley’s hot air balloon over Letchworth State Park. The Hornell St. Patrick’s Day Parade was one of the events that she most looked forward to each year. Mary also loved Elvis Presley and always enjoyed Maxine’s “words of wisdom.”

Her loving family includes her husband of 55 years, Matthew F. Colomaio, who she married at St. Patrick’s Church in Salamanca on July 12, 1958; her seven children and their families, Joseph (Susan) Colomaio of Kinston, N.C., John (Darlene) Colomaio of Buffalo N.Y., Rosemarie (Patricia Corning) Colomaio of Wales, N.Y., Deacon Robert (Pamela) Colomaio of Bath, N.Y. Michael Colomaio of Hornell, N.Y., William (Pamela) of Hornell, N.Y. and Lisa (John Grillo) Briggs of Fremont, N.Y.; her 11 grandchildren, Blaire Cooke, Carley (Nick McMichael) Briggs,
Gena Briggs, Mary Catherine Colomaio, Theresa Anne Colomaio, Vincent Colomaio, Anna Colomaio, Johnny Colomaio, Alex Dracup, Michelle McWhirter and Lucia Grillo; her sister, Frances Crouch of Allegany, N.Y.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Dorothy Smith, of Howard

Hornell, NY – Dorothy J. Smith, 91, a long time resident of the Town of Howard, passed away peacefully Monday (March 31, 2014) .

Born in the Town of Fremont, June 10, 1922, the daughter of Lewis and Mildred Burdett Davis, she had resided in the Town of Howard since 1941. She was a graduate of Hornell High School, Class of 1939. She was married to Stanley K. Smith, and was active as a wife, mother, and home maker, especially taking part in the operation of the family farm.

She was a member of the Sovereign Grace Baptist Church on the Big Creek Road, and was recently honored for over 75 year membership in the Stephens Mills Grange. She was active in her church teaching Sunday School, participating in the church choir, the Womans Group of the church and also served on the election board of the Hornell School District for several years.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Stanley K. Smith in 2008, her son, Allyn Smith in 1973, her infant grand daughter, Mary Lynn Burns, as well as her brother, Herman Davis.

She is survived by three daughters, Carol (William Phelps) Burns of Arkport, Marcia (Albert) Burns of Bath, and Joanne (Roger) Williamson of Greenwood, two sons, Lowell (Bonnie) Smith and Dale (Lucy) Smith both of the Town of Howard, her brother, Charles Davis of Cortland, her sister-in-law, Earla Davis of Hornell, 23 Grandchildren, 40 Great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren , several nieces and nephews.

The family will be present to receive friends at the Bender – Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell on Saturday from Noon until 2 PM. Funeral services will be held following calling hours on Saturday at 2:00 PM, Rev. Donald Rubel officiating. Burial will be in Howard Cemetery. A Grange Memorial Service will be held at 1:45 PM on Saturday prior to the funeral service.
