Dodgers Win NYCBL Title
August 4th, 2014 – The Hornell Dodgers claimed the 2014 NYCBL Crown with a 6-4 victory over the Oneonta Outlaws to win the Championship series 2-0. The Dodgers finish the season with a record breaking 44-9 overall record.
Hornell used timely scoring and a complete game pitching performance from Seth Cornell (Houghton) to send a large Maple City Park crowd home happy.
The Dodgers, who were the visitors in the game, got on the board in the 1st inning when they put together a two-out rally. Thad Johnson (St. Bonaventure) and Hank Morrison (Mercyhurst) singled to start the rally. Spencer Scorza (Cornell) plated Johnson with a single and Morrison came all away around to score following an error. Another error on a grounder hit by Connor Lewis (Monroe CC) allowed Scorza to score to make it 3-0.
Oneonta answered right back, Ben Mauseth and Carson Waln singled to start the inning and after a pop up, Ramon Osuna Sanchez blasted a three-run homer onto Adsit St. to tie the game up.
In the 2nd, Hornell once again scored with two outs. Jimmy Latona (Monroe CC) drew a two out walk and came around to score on a double to right center by Brandon Sandoval (Vanguard).
Both teams threatened to score but Cornell and Outlaw starter Brandon Agar kept the score 4-3 until the 8th inning.
In the 8th, the Dodgers loaded the bases and picked up two insurance runs when Jordan Climpson (Cameron) drew a bases loaded walk and Blake Thomas (Webster) plated Conner Grey (St. Bonaventure) on a fielder’s choice.
Osuna Sanchez started a Outlaw rally in the 8th when he singled and came around to score on a two-out single by Frank DAgostino to cut the Hornell lead to 6-4.
Hornell looked like they were going to add to the lead in the 9th loading the bases with one out but reliever Joseph Romero got out of the jam and kep the Outlaws within two heading into the final half inning.
Cornell, who scattered ten hits in his complete game victory, recoreded a ground out to third, a strikeout, and a fly out to left field to seal the victory and begin the celebration. Cornell allowed four earned runs, walked none, and struck out five in picking up his second postseason victory and eighth on the summer.
Brandon Agar pitched well but took the loss. He went 6.1 innings allowing seven hits, two earned runs and one walk while striking out five. Oneonta used five relievers in the final 2.2 innings.
Scorza was 2 for 4 with a RBI while Johnson was 2 for 5. Osuna Sanchez finished 2 for 4 with 3 RBI while Waln was 2 for 4.
Sandoval was named the championship series MVP, Cornell was named the defensive MVP, and Osuna Sanchez was the offensive MVP.
The championship was the 5th in the 21 years of collegiate baseball in Hornell and the first since 2005.
