Statement From State Senate Candidate George Borrello:

Chautauqua County Executive George Borrello today won the Republican Party Primary for the State Senate’s 57th District. Borrello, who is also the endorsed Republican, Conservative and Independence Party candidate, will be on the ballot in November’s general election to succeed the recently retired Senator Cathy Young. Borrello thanked his supporters, and all Republican voters, for their turnout in the primary and pledges to work on everyone’s behalf to fight for the tax relief and smart economic policies our region deserve.
“I’d like to thank all my supporters for turning out and voting for me in the primary for State Senate,” Borrello said. “Because of you, I will be on the ballot in November and I’m so grateful for all your efforts on my behalf.

Joint Statement From Senator O’Mara and Assemblyman Palmesano:

The Senate and Assembly have approved legislation sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C,I-Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning) designating a portion of I-86 in Steuben County as the “Trooper Nicholas F. Clark Memorial Bridge.”

The legislation (S5484/A7577) now goes to Governor Andrew Cuomo to be signed into law. If approved, the bridges on I-86 where the highway crosses State Route 415 will receive the designation. That section of the highway is located less than a half mile north of the State Police Barracks (Troop E, Zone 3) in Bath, where Clark was stationed at the time of his death.

Clark, a native of Canisteo, was killed in the line of duty last July during a confrontation in the town of Erwin. He was 29 years old and had been a New York State Trooper for three years.

The O’Mara-Palmesano legislation honors Clark’s memory, and pays tribute to his life and service.

In a joint statement, O’Mara and Palmesano said, “We will look forward to Governor Cuomo signing this legislation into law and to an official designation ceremony in the future. We hope that this action will serve as a fitting tribute recalling the life, service and ultimate sacrifice of one of our local heroes. We hope that it will help express the enduring respect of our local community, our entire region, and the State of New York. The ‘Trooper Nicholas F. Clark Memorial Bridge’ will forever honor Nick’s memory and forever stand as a reminder of his service.”

Clark was born and raised in the Canisteo Valley. He graduated from Canisteo-Greenwood High School in 2006 and from Alfred University in 2011. A stellar athlete, he was a New York State high school wrestling champion, and a four-year starter and All-Conference outside linebacker for the Alfred Saxons, where he set school records in tackles and earned a tryout with the Buffalo Bills.

He graduated from the State Police Academy in 2015 and was stationed in Ithaca and Auburn before transferring to the Bath barracks.

His mother (Theresa), father (Anthony), and brother (Nathan) survive him.

HORNELL, NY – There’s a post circulating on Snapchat locally, saying that people should stay away from the Hornell Intermediate School because of robberies there. We spoke with Hornell Police who say that as of now, no victims have stepped forward claiming to have been robbed near the Hornell Immediate School.

The race we’re keeping an eye on, is the New York State Senate primary between Allegany County lawmaker Curt Crandall and Chautauaqua County Executive George Borrello. Crandall and Borrello are both running for the Senator Cathy Young seat.

Joint Statement From Assemblyman Palmesano and Senator O’Mara:

State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C,I-Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning) are applauding the restoration of $65 million in state “Extreme Winter Recovery” funding to assist counties, towns, and villages regionally and throughout New York maintain and repair local roads and bridges.

The critical funding, which has been allocated annually over the past several years through the state’s Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Programs (CHIPS), was left out of the 2019-20 state budget enacted by Governor Andrew Cuomo and the Legislature’s Democratic majorities. This year’s final state budget adopted on April 1 included no additional funding for CHIPS base aid and cut the $65-million “Extreme Winter Recovery” allocation that has become invaluable to municipalities.

O’Mara and Palmesano, who over the past decade have worked closely with county and town highway superintendents to build the “Local Roads Matter” advocacy campaign, have been highly critical of the cut.

In a joint statement, O’Mara and Palmesano said, “The elimination of this year’s ‘Extreme Winter Recovery’ allocation pulled the foundation out from under local roads and bridges throughout this state. We are glad it’s been restored because it is the absolute right thing to do. In a state budget allocating hundreds of billions of dollars, including billions of dollars alone for downstate mass transit, local roads and bridges should always be a top priority. One of state government’s fundamental responsibilities is the improvement and maintenance of local roads and bridges. This ‘Extreme Winter Recovery’ restoration is critical but now we need to get back to work on building the case that this state needs to make a stronger investment in local transportation infrastructure for the sake of local communities, economies, motorists, and property taxpayers. We look forward to continuing this work.”

The restored winter recovery funding was included in legislation (S6616/A8434) that the Senate approved late last night. The Assembly approved it earlier this morning.

In March, over 600 local highway superintendents and highway department employees representing nearly every region of the state rallied in Albany as part of the annual “Local Roads Matter” effort. O’Mara and Palmesano have helped lead the campaign in the Legislature since 2013 and have delivered significant funding over the past decade for local roads, bridges, and culverts.

In a March 4 letter to Cuomo and legislative leaders, O’Mara, Palmesano and their Senate and Assembly colleagues made the case for stronger state support, “Local governments, for the foreseeable future, will continue to struggle to address budgetary demands in the face of the state-imposed property tax cap, rising pension and health care costs, and unfunded state mandates, among other burdens. Furthermore, despite the state’s increased commitment to CHIPS since 2013, base aid has remained stagnant over the past seven years. There is clearly a compelling case for New York State to take these proposed steps to address urgent local transportation and infrastructure shortcomings, and we believe it is simply the right thing to do. In order to meet the critical investment level needed to maintain and improve local roads, bridges, and culverts, a stronger state-local partnership is the only answer.”
