Caton Man Accused Of Threatening Members Of Sheriff’s Office

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on December 24, 2020, deputies of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office arrested Dana L. McCarrick, age 45, of Riley Hill Road, Caton, New York, following an early morning warrant service by the Steuben County Critical Incident Response Team at Mr. McCarrick’s residence. It is alleged that Mr. McCarrick repeatedly threatened to kill or maim members of the Sheriff’s Office by use of firearms, explosions and “gutting with a knife”. It is further alleged that Mr. McCarrick possessed a firearm after being convicted of a crime.

A search warrant was performed at the residence which also allegedly revealed an amount of suspected marihuana being grown for alleged sales, and brass knuckles. Mr. McCarrick was charged with Making a Terroristic Threat, a Class D Felony and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, also a Class D Felony. Mr. McCarrick was arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Court and released.

Further charges are expected as the investigation is on-going.

Update: 4:03pm – Wlea News asked Sheriff Allard what the motive behind the threats were, here is the sheriff’s reply:
He alleges that members of the sheriff’s office “stole” his guns after he was arrested for illegally possessing them.
