FROM THE AARON GIES FOR CONGRESS CAMPAIGN: Aaron Gies, Democratic candidate for Congress in New York’s 23rd Congressional District, was endorsed by The League of Humane Voters New York at the “Free the Beagles! Rally to Save the Dogs” outside Marshall BioResources on Saturday, June 27. Kelly Chafee, on behalf of The League of Humane Voters New York, said that the organization “is proud to endorse Aaron Gies. We are excited to endorse a candidate whom we believe will offer transparency and compassion to the animal protection movement. We are thrilled that he stands with us on many issues, including opposing the Save Our Bacon Act. We are proud to help a candidate that believes in science not suffering get elected to the NYS 23rd District”. In his acceptance speech, Aaron Gies remarked, “Behind this tasteful landscaping, dogs and cats, ferrets and pigs are bred at scale to be sold. Labs that purchase them perform cruel, inhumane experiments on them. The animals behind these walls are not political props. They need consistent, dedicated advocates who will advance public policy that respects their dignity.”
In May, Rep. Nicholas Langworthy (R-NY23) attended a rally outside Marshall BioResources and committed to working to end animal testing. He recently co-sponsored the Preventing Animal Abuse and Waste Act (PAAW), H.R. 4698, aimed at ending the painful experimentation on cats and dogs by the National Institutes of Health. “My opponent has made saving the beagles a prominent theme of his reelection campaign,” said Gies. “The PAAW Act addresses only the small world of grants to the NIH, and includes a carve-out for any testing that “has no viable alternative.” This is not “ending animal cruelty,” as Langworthy claims, but erecting a tiny bureaucratic hurdle for scientists while the breeding continues and the business world goes on torturing animals to test consumer products.” Gies concluded with, “My campaign is built around the Common Good: the idea that when we design policy with the needs of everyone in mind, we all win. That’s true with animals too. Cruelty and exploitation make a few people rich and leave us all poorer. When we treat animals with respect and kindness, we also benefit.”
