After 43 days of needless hardship, the Schumer Shutdown has finally come to an end. In the end, a handful of common-sense Democrats joined with Republicans to do what was right for the country and reopen the government. For six long weeks, Senate Democrats chose politics over governing–taking food off people’s tables, grounding flights, and withholding paychecks from the men and women who serve our nation. They used hardworking Americans as pawns for political leverage while VA employees, border agents, and Coast Guard members worked without pay, families relying on SNAP and WIC worried about feeding their children, and air traffic controllers were stretched to the brink. As I have said from the start, this was never about budgets or priorities; it was about power. It was astonishing to watch the same Democrats who spent weeks staging press conferences demanding benefits be restored turn around and vote yet again to keep the government closed. The hypocrisy is staggering. They weren’t trying to end the shutdown–they were reveling in the chaos because they believed it gave them a political advantage. That’s not a partisan accusation; it’s a fact. And you don’t have to take my word for it. While Senators Schumer and Gillibrand were leading the effort to keep the government shut down, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman courageously broke ranks and called it what it was: a Democrat-manufactured shutdown. I have always opposed government shutdowns—they are cruel, ineffective, and harmful to the very people we serve. I’ll never hesitate to call out those responsible or give credit where it’s due. I’m grateful that order has finally been restored and that paychecks and critical programs have resumed. Now it’s time to refocus on the pressing issues facing our nation, like making life more affordable for hardworking families. There is no time to waste. Sincerely, |
