Congressman Nick Langworthy’s Weekly Update Oct 20, 2025

October 20, 2025

We are now in the third week of the Schumer Shutdown and as of today, Senate Democrats have used the filibuster 10 separate times to block the government from reopening.

They don’t care about the impact it’s having on everyday Americans—and they are so emboldened by the radical resist crowd, that they’re openly admitting they’ll put Americans’ safety and well-being at risk.

In responding to the impact of the shutdown, a senior Democratic aide actually said that they will continue to keep the government closed “short of planes falling out of the sky.”

They’re completely comfortable letting air traffic control be short staffed, our active-duty military missing their paycheck and women and infants losing access to critical nutrition funding.

The healthcare debate is a red herring. If they truly cared about healthcare, they wouldn’t be trying to gut the Rural Health Transformation Fund — a $50 billion investment that’s helping small-town hospitals modernize care, expand telehealth, and keep doors open for patients across Western New York and the Southern Tier.

Meanwhile, the ACA subsidies that they are using as their excuse to keep the government closed were designed by the Democrats themselves to be temporary, emergency Covid-era spending. Only 0.6% of New Yorkers actually use them and if they expired, any low-income Americans would still have access to subsidized care.

But as I’ve said all along, this debate isn’t about healthcare. It’s about catering to the “No Kings” resist crowd that hates President Trump and wants him to fail no matter what. It’s the same group of extremists that can’t give him credit for ending wars, returning hostages, lowering gas prices, or cutting taxes on working class Americans. They just want to obstruct—and Chuck Schumer is desperate to be in their favor because he knows his political future is dependent on their support.

The American people deserve better than this, and public opinion shows they are seeing right through the Democrats’ charade.

I’m going to keep fighting to reopen our government, protect hardworking taxpayers and stand up for rural America.

Sincerely,

Rep. Nicholas A. Langworthy signature image
