FROM JEN HILL, CCE: On Saturday, October 11 Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County (CCE Steuben) hosted its fourth annual Farm Trail Day at 15 participating farms and businesses across Steuben County. The event saw participants from all around Steuben County as well as families from neighboring counties, some traveling from over an hour away to explore our community’s farms.
The offerings at each location were unique and the trail was designed as a choose-your-own adventure, giving participating families full range to stop at the farms that interested them most. Activities ranged from warehouse and farm tours and informational hayrides to apple picking and cider making. The event gave people in local communities, and those visiting, a look at the diverse agriculture in Steuben County. Farms showcased during Farm Trail Day included a grape vineyard, a potato farm, a large dairy farm, several family farms that specialize in different products, an apple and fruit orchard, a homestead, a tractor retailer, and more.
Despite the cloudy skies and occasional rain at some of the locations, those who attended Farm Trail Day enjoyed their experience. When turning in her farm passport one woman remarked that “it was the best thing we’ve ever done with our grandchildren”.
Farm Trail Day also included an opportunity to win a basket of local farm goods for those who stopped at four or more locations throughout the day. Products in the giveaway baskets were purchased from the participating farms and businesses and include locally made honey, chips made with Steuben County potatoes, baked goods, hats, mugs, and more. Two baskets were given away, one for an adult who attended Farm Trail Day and one for a child. The winners of both baskets have been notified.
CCE Steuben sincerely thanks the 15 farms and businesses who opened their doors for Farm Trail Day this year including Lismore Dairy, Lain’s Cider Mill, Stewart’s Family Farm, Larry Romance & Son, Golden Age Cheese, Ryan Vineyards, Squires Produce, Crooked Line Farm and Orchard, Dave’s Produce, Lowery Family Farms, Mud Creek Bison Ranch, ZiegenVine Homestead, Evermore Farms, Bluebird Trail Farm, and Donderewicz and Daughter.
This year’s Farm Trail Day was made possible by a grant from the Steuben County Conference and Visitors Bureau.
