Doris E. Ells of Hornell

HORNELL-Doris E. Ells, 97, formerly of Canisteo, Arkport and Green Acres Mobile Home Park in Hornell, passed away Monday afternoon (March 4, 2019) at Updyke’s Willow Ridge in Hornell, with her family by her side.

Born in Canisteo on Feb. 7, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Jennie Hubertus. On Aug. 4, 1943, she was married at St. Mary’s Church in Rexville to James A. Ells, who predeceased her on May 22, 1994, after 51 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her two sisters, Marie (Al) Whittman of Rochester, Charlotte (William) Brill of Hornell; her two brothers, Harold (Lena) Hubertus of Bath and Joseph (Elaine) Hubertus of Canisteo; also her daughter in law, Helen “Wheeze” Ells.

A lifelong resident of the Canisteo, Arkport and Hornell area, Doris was a graduate of Canisteo Central School, class of 1941.

While residing in Arkport, she assisted her husband, Jim in the operation of the former Ells Service Station. Doris eventually moved to Green Acres Mobile Home Park and was currently residing at Updyke’s Willow Ridge in Hornell.

She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Rexville and most recently at St. Ann’s Church of Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Hornell.

Doris was formerly involved with the Arkport Central School PTA and volunteered at St. James Hospital in Hornell and was a member of a Bible Study at St. Ann’s Church. Throughout the years she also enjoyed cake decorating, ceramics and crocheting.

Her family will remember her as being a tremendous and dedicated mother who loved to attend her children and grandchildren’s activities.

Her loving family includes her three sons, James “Fritz” (Nancy) Ells of Campbell, William Ells of Almond and Stanley (Diane) Ells of Arkport; her eight grandchildren, Stephanie (Ronald) Thompson of Horseheads, Stephen Ells of High Point, N.C., David (Lisa) Ells of Rochester, Christopher (Polly) Ells of Fulton, N.Y. and Jennifer (Donald) Mentiply of Delanson, N.Y., Shannon (Leah) Ells of Montour Falls, Jason (Andrea) Ells of Henrietta and Jesse Ells of Arkport; also her nine great-grandchildren; as well as her nieces and nephews.

The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St. in Hornell is honored to serve the family of Doris E. Ells.

To honor her wishes there will be no calling hours. Relatives and friends are invited to join her family at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in her memory at 10 a.m. Saturday (March 9, 2019). Committal prayers and interment will follow at Heritage Hill Cemetery, Arkport.

Envelopes for memorial contribution will be available at the church on Saturday.
