Fire at 350 Canisteo Street In Hornell

March 12, 2015

HORNELL, NY – Fire Chief Dan Smith outlined the actions taken by the Fire Department while fighting the fire that ignited on 350 Canisteo Street yesterday. Smith noted that the fire apparently started around 3pm on Wednesday, and he says that the fire department witnessed heavy smoke conditions upon arrival.

According to the fire chief, that fire started in the upper apartment of the duplex and had been burning for quite some time also climbing up into the attic of the structure. A fire hydrant near the structure was frozen, a crew was sent to another location for water however, Hornell’s fire fighters had the fire knocked down and under control by that time. There was no one living in the downstairs apartment at the time and only one tenant lived in the upstairs apartment.

Smith said that there were no injuries reported by both the tenant and the firefighters and the crew did an outstanding job protecting the neighboring structures.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
