FROM THE HORNELL FIRE DEPT’S UNION: This afternoon (Sunday) was exceptionally busy for your professional firefighters. Members of Shift #4 responded with Engine 83 and Truck 4 to a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, they discovered a working basement fire and promptly struck a 2nd alarm. This alarm brought in off-duty personnel with Engine 52, Ambulance 112, and C-94, as well as South Hornell Fire Company Engine 11. The fire was swiftly extinguished, resulting in minimal structural damage. As units began to clear the scene, a second call was received regarding another possible structure fire. (That was on Merrill Lane). E-11, E-52, and T-4 responded to this call. Upon arrival, units found that a small grease fire had been extinguished prior to their arrival. A fan was utilized to evacuate smoke from the residence. Shortly after returning to the station, T-4 responded to an odor investigation. A natural gas leak was discovered in the basement of a residence. National Fuel was requested to the scene. These incidents occurred within a span of less than two hours. We extend our gratitude to the South Hornell Fire Company, Hornell Police Department, Hornell DPW, Hornell Department of Codes Enforcement, NYSEG, National Fuel, and all off-duty and call personnel for their invaluable assistance.
