We’ve been checking in with different schools in the area, and here’s some of what we found out. For Hornell High School students in the fall, there are going to be some new rules. Here they are. No cell phone use between 8:05am and 3:03pm. No cell phone use while in the Hornell High cafeteria for lunch time. If a Hornell High student has a medical issue and has more of a need for a cell phone, a plan can be worked out between the school and the students family. High school students in Hornell won’t be able to carry phones around with them throughout the day, they’ll have to keep their cell phones in their locker. The same goes for earbuds and headphones – those are to be kept inside the student’s lockers. If a parent or guardian needs to contact an HHS student, then they should call the high school’s main office and the staff will get the student a message.
Now here’s what we know about both Arkport and Alfred Almond, cell phones are not allowed for UPK through 6th grade. For grades 7-12: Cell Phones, listening devices, watches with internet/phone capabilities and earbuds/headphones are not allowed during instruction unless directly and clearly informed by the teacher. Also, Arkport and Alfred-Almond students are not allowed to use their devices to take pictures/videos of other students, unless a part of an academic assignment and it’s given the okay by the teacher.
From Canisteo-Greenwood Superintendnet Tom Crook: We currently do not have a “policy” per se. Ours is more of a practice by the teachers. We give our teachers the autonomy to make the decisions about cell phones in their classroom. Most have the students put it away during instruction and we rarely have issues with the students and their phones during the school day. Most of our issues stem from their outside use that makes its way into the school day (social media posts, pictures being sent, messaging back and forth the night before, etc.). We handle these situations if it is brought to our attention, and it is disrupting the educational process for our student(s).
