HORNELL, NY – The Hornell Fire Chief Dan Smith, sent out the following statement this morning:

The Hornell Fire Department is conducting a Smoke Detector installation Program
in homes of City residents 65 years or older. Each participant may receive up to three detectors
to protect their home. The Detectors will be provided at no cost to the home owner, and will
be installed by City Firefighters.

These Detectors are the more expensive Photoelectric Detector with a Ten year battery;
best for detecting a smoldering fire.

Our intention is to increase the chances of surviving a fire for adults 65 or older.
At age 65 older adults are twice as likely to be killed or injured by fires compared to the rest
of the population. By age 75 that risk increases to three times and up to four times by age 85.

There are no financial restrictions; the only requirement to participate is one person
age 65 or older must reside in the home.

Residents that would like to take part in this program can call the Hornell Fire Station at
324-2100
