Governor Hochul To Sign Medically Assisted Suicide Bill

December 18, 2025

Democrat Governor Kathy Hochul is going to sign the Medically Assisted Suicide Bill.  The governor says only adults will be able to take the suicide medicine, they have to only have six months to live and the person committing suicide will have to take the medicine themselves.  “None of us are immune [to losing a loved one to a disease that robbed them of everything]. Such as life and so is death — two forces in life that are inevitable. And so I was moved by their courage and I wanted to help them put an end to a decades long journey and say, ‘You can rest now. Your loved one has been honored in a way that is profound. And to the extent that you’re still wounded, suffering, questioning yourself, may you rest in peace yourself in this life, may you not have that trauma and that angst any longer.’ That’s what I wish for all my friends here.”

Republican Assemblyman Joe Sempolinski says it’s a sad day for New York State and he says this law will negatively affect the developmentally disabled.

From The Assemblyman’s Press Office:  His daughter, JoJo, has Down Syndrome and multiple congenital heart defects. Assemblyman Sempolinski said he can sadly now envision a future where, one day, a medical provider may convince JoJo as an adult to end her life.  “As the father of a daughter with a developmental disability, I fear that legalized assisted suicide will eventually be abused to harm the disabled,” he said. “I can see a day when someone will induce, trick or coerce my daughter into killing herself. Once this option is created, it will be abused. The terminally ill need access to quality hospice and palliative care, but the answer is not suicide. I stand for life.”
