Hornell And Corning Mayors: Our Police Dept’s Need Social Workers To Assist In Mental Health Situations

September 23, 2024

The mayors from the two cities in Steuben County, Corning Mayor William Boland and Hornell Mayor John Buckley, were at this mornings Steuben County Legislative meeting. The two mayors said their police departments are overloaded with mental health arrests and both mayors say, their police officers are not trained in how to deal with mental disorders. Mayors Boland and Buckley had two requests: the county needs to hire more mental health workers (they say there are 14 unfilled positions right now) and the county needs to put a full time social worker on duty on the Corning and Hornell Police departments.

Steuben County Legislative Chairperson Kelly Fitzpatrick says the issues will be discussed at the budget workshop on October 8th.
