The Hornell Common Council met last night. One issue discussed was the Hornell City Marshal position. Mayor John Buckley and City Hall Attorney Tim Rosell mentioned that the City Marshall wears body armor and carries a pistol. Alderman David Sutfin (R, 1st Ward) strongly supported the idea. Sutfin noted that sometimes social workers have attempted this sort of work and unsuccessfully.
Alderman John Carbone (D, Ward 10) questioned the idea of the Marshall carrying a gun, and Carbone wondered if the weapon might lead to possible legal action against the city. Carbone also noted that it might be better if the Marshall’s job was a contracted position, to protect the city from possible legal action.
Mayor Buckley explained that the most dangerous job the Marshall has is evictions. City attorney Rosell stated that the Marshall carries a pistol for protection and that this is not mandated by the city to carry a firearm. Rosell also said that the Marshall has a pistol permit. It was also explained that sometimes the Marshall is accompanied by Hornell police.
In other news the council reappointed Kathy Canty as fair housing coordinator. Also Samantha Jaminson was reappointed deputy clerk and deputy registrar.
