July 22, 2025

HORNELL, NY – On Monday night, Mayor John Buckley and the Hornell Common Council voted to make the City of Hornell, the SEQR lead agency for the intermunicipal sewer improvement project, between Hornell, North Hornell and Hornellsville. Water Pollution Control Plant Chief Operator Rich Dunning publicly thanked Buckley and the Common Council, for applying for that $12.5 million dollar grant. Afterwards. we asked the mayor for his thoughts on what Dunning said. “I appreciate the thoughts of Chief Operator Dunning,” Buckley told WLEA News. “He has been a key person in this. The Common Council has voted to apply for funding towards an intermuncipal sewer project, which will ultimately benefit residentss of all three communities. It will also lay the foundation for future growth which benefits all of our communities,” said Buckley.

Also at last night’s Common Council meeting, the council voted to authorize the mayuor to enter into an intermunicipal agreement with the Village of North Hornell, for the maintainence of a new trail. “The walking/pedestrian and bicycle path will start on Cass Street and will extend all the way through the Village of North Hornell and past the plaza – ending at the Simmons/Rockwell intersection on Route 36,” Mayor Buckley explained. “This project is part of the D.O.T. Route 36 project. The City of Hornell is a proud partner in this and it will make the corridor safer for walkers, runners, bicyclists and also unlock more opportunities for people who just want to get out and exercise,” the mayor said.

Buckley also noted during the Monday night council meeting, that the agreement calls for:

Hornell to be responsible for snow removal and trash pickup on the trail
Hornellsville will take care of the mowing on the side of the trail
North Hornell will pay for the electricity for the lights
