Last night at City Hall in Hornell, there was a public hearing on allowing cannabis dispensaries and consumption sites in the City. Afterward at the regular meeting, the Common Council voted 7 – 2 to opt out of both. Council members Melissa Ponticello, Dan Warriner, Jessica Cleveland, Kevin Valentine, Jim Bassage, Steve Shinebarger and John Carbone all voted to opt out while aldermen Jeff Brown and John Allison voted against the measure.
Mayor John Buckley said the newly formed Cannabis Control Board has yet to issue any regulations or guidelines to municipalities and that the local governments are flying blind regarding the issue.
Mayor Buckley also said the Common Council is doing their due diligence by taking a wait and see approach and can opt back in at any time.
