HORNELL, NY – On Thursday morning, the City of Hornell Public Safety Board met for their monthly meeting, and the major point of discussion was the need for a greater focus on mental health and drug problems in the city. The Police Chief said that Hornell received 1,200 mental health calls in 2023, and in the first part of January, they are already up to 50. Additionally, officers from the city needed to use Narcan 42 times in 2023.
Hornell Police Chief Ted Murray noted that the Hornell Police Department is the only department in Steuben County to be fully staffed, and the HPD needed every officer this year, as calls went up by over 2,000 between 2022 and 2023.
Fire Chief Frank Brzowski said during the meeting yesterday that the Fire Department ended the year with 380 fire calls and over 4,000 ambulance calls.
