Horseheads Beat Hornell Steamers Monday Night At Maple City Park

HORNELL, NY – Horseheads scored eight runs in the 2nd inning and held on for a 9-8 victory over the Hornell Steamers on Monday night.
The Hitmen sent 12 batters to the plate in the 2nd and plated eight runs. They collected five hits and took advantage of three walks and an error.
Hornell got on the board with a pair of runs in the 3rd. Robert Chesney (Central Connecticut) hit a sac fly and Tim Burns (Maine Presque Isle) collected a RBI single.

Eli Brown (Youngstown State) hit a sac fly in the 4th to make it 8-3 but Horseheads added a run in the 6th to build on their lead.

In the 7th, Burns hit a long two-run homer into left to cut into the lead. Daniel Melendez (Finger Lakes CC) and Brown followed with RBI singles to make it 9-7.

With two outs in the bottom of the 9th, Melendez doubled to deep center and Logan Hoyt (Alfred State) followed with a RBI single. Bradley Perry was able to induce a fly out to end the game and strand the tying runner on base.
Hoyt led Hornell’s 13-hit attack with a 3 for 5 day. Burns was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI, Melendez was 2 for 4 with a RBI, and DJ Stoainovich (Finger Lakes CC) and Justin Swanson (North Park) each collected two hits.

Gates Miller (Alfred State) kept Hornell in the game with five innings of work. He allowed one run on three hits. He walked two and struck out one.

Ryan Scott, Nate Kearney, Lucas Granger, and Gabe Fellows each had two hits. Johnathon Haines pitched the first five innings to earn the win while Perry pitched the final four innings to earn the save.

The Steamers head on the road for the next nine games starting with a doubleheader vs. the Syracuse Salt Cats starting at 5 p.m.
