Steuben County is working to do an emergency capital project, for storm damage repairs, because of Tropical Storm Debby. The capital project is going to be called the Disaster Response/Flood Response August 2024. The county is working to move a million dollars from the unrestricted general fund, into a fund for this capital project. Also, Steuben County Manager Jack Wheeler says, the county has largely been focused on Canisteo, where a double wide home went into a river on County Route 119.
Wheeler said this morning that it appears that Steuben County has enough monetary damage because of August 9th to get FEMA funding (for county roads and bridges, not for individual property owners who suffered storm damage to their homes, property, etc). “It looks like we’ll reach the damage threshold – for those of you who aren’t familiar, the state has to have a total of $37.5 million dollars in damages, and Steuben County has to have $25 million dollars in damages,” Wheeler announced this morning. “We think between the roads and bridges and what happened to Jasper Troupsburg Central, that we’re going to get there,” Wheeler stated.”
