Jessie M. Peterson, formerly of North Hornell

NORTH HORNELL-Jessie M. Peterson,100, formerly of Cleveland Ave., passed away Sunday morning (June 22, 2014) at McAuley Manor in North Hornell.

Born in Elmira on Feb. 25, 1914, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Eva Mills Mansfield. On July 6, 1934 she was married in Elmira to Herbert W. Peterson, who predeceased her on May 1, 1989 after 55 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband she was also predeceased by her only sister, Isabelle Osgood in 2008.

A former resident of Elmira, Jessie graduated from Elmira Free Academy and attended Elmira College and has resided in the Hornell area since 1951.

She was employed as an executive secretary for the Health Association of Steuben County and Steuben County Heart Assoc. Chapter.

Jessie has been a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Hornell since 1986 and served on the Board of Deacons. She was also a past District Deputy and Grand Matron of the Eastern Star in Elmira.

She was an avid reader of widely varying subjects ranging from art, religion, language, history and the U.S. Supreme Court. Jessie also enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida and RVing throughout the United States in retirement. But her greatest joy was her devotion and generosity to her family.

Her family includes her three sons, Herbert (Faith) Peterson of Cape Cod, Mass, Charles (Barbara) Peterson of Clayton, N.Y. and William (Phyllis) Peterson of Hornell; her nine grandchildren, Sean, Kyle, Kara, Joel, Michelle, Heather, Kimberly, Julie and Darin; her 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; also her nephew and three nieces.

The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in Hornell is honored to serve the family of Jessie M. Peterson.

To honor her wishes there will be no calling hours. A funeral service will be held in her memory at 11 a.m. Saturday in the sanctuary of the United Presbyterian Church, 150 Main St., Hornell, with the Rev. Virginia Murray officiating.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to either the United Presbyterian Church, 150 Main St., Hornell or to the Hornell Family YMCA, 12 Center St., Hornell, N.Y. 14843. Envelopes will be available at the church.
