Joseph P. Aini, of Hornell

HORNELL-Joseph P. Aini, 84, of Riverside Place, passed away Friday morning (Feb. 22, 2019) at Rochester General Hospital.

Born in Hornell on Mar. 16, 1934, he was a son of the late Antonio and Jane Marie (Seu) Aini. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by two brothers, Dr. Matthew Aini and John Aini; and his sister, Patricia Rivers.

A lifelong resident of Hornell, Joe was a graduate of Hornell High School and received an associate’s degree in medical technology from the Franklin School of Science & Art in Philadelphia Pa.

He honorably served his country with the U. S. Army at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Joe was a faithful employee of St. James Hospital in Hornell where he was employed as a bacteriology supervisor until he retired. He was an avid gardener and after retiring he enjoyed spending time playing golf and was also employed for several years as a bus driver for the Hornell Area Transit (HAT).

He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and as a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell and was also a member of the Hornell Council No. 243, Knights of Columbus.

Joe dedicated his life to his wife, children and grandchildren and especially loved the times he spent with them.

His loving family includes his beloved wife of 58 years, the former Mary Shea, who he married at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Hornell on Aug. 13, 1960; five devoted children, Mary Helen (Chris) Hogan of Grafton, Wisc., Karen (Ben) Wistuk of Greenwood, Joseph Aini of Albany, Thomas (Pam) Aini of Hornell and Patrick (Jane) Aini of Arkport; three granddaughters, Mary Frances Aini, Erin Hogan and Marie Rose Aini; five grandsons, Ryan and Michael Hogan, Matthew and Patrick Aini and Michael Aini; two step-grandchildren, Bronson and Sydney Wistuk, both f Greenwood. one brother, Anthony (Kathy) Aini of Hornell; two sisters-in-law, Eleanor “Cissy” Sullivan and Teresa Shea both of Elmira; one brother-in-law, Roland Rivers of Voorheesville; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours are 4-7 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 28, 2019) at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Relatives and friends are invited to meet his family at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday (Mar. 1, 2019). Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.

The United States flag and the Army flag will proudly fly at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in recognition of Joe’s military service.

Joe has requested the courtesy of no flowers and suggested that those wishing may contribute in his memory to either, St. Ann’s Church of Our Lady of the Valley parish, 27 Erie Ave., Hornell, to St. James Hospital Foundation, 411 Canisteo St., Hornell, N.Y. 14843 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 435 E. Henrietta Road, Rochester, N.Y. 14620. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
