I want to wish all the mothers and caretakers across the 23rd Congressional District a very happy Mother’s Day. I also want to give a special shout out to my wife, Erin, for being the best mother our kids could ever ask for. She is the heartbeat of our family who sacrifices so much for us. There aren’t enough words to express my admiration of the strength, grace, resilience and love she shows us every day.
That’s the special thing about mothers—they are unstoppable. They juggle a million “to do’s” on a daily basis, making sure everyone is happy, healthy, and nurtured. It’s often referred to as the “invisible load of motherhood” because it might look seamless from the outside, but we know how much work and energy goes into raising the next generation.
They do it all with love because they’d do anything for their kids. But for mothers of children facing pediatric cancer or rare disease, that load isn’t just invisible, it’s all-consuming. I saw that firsthand this week as I stood with families at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center where we discussed the passage of the Give the Kids a Chance Act. This landmark legislation that was just signed into law helps deliver hope to families by expanding research opportunities, encouraging investment in pediatric treatments, and helping more children gain access to cutting-edge therapies. I was proud to throw my full support behind it because while doctors and parents are fighting this fight, the very least Congress can do is to give them every tool possible to win.
Since coming to Congress, I’ve made it my mission to advance the needle on stamping out childhood disease. I was proud to lead the successful fight to include Krabbe disease into standard newborn testing and when pediatric cancer advocates came to me about the Give Kids a Chance Act, I knew we had to do everything we could to help get it into law.
This bill marks a significant investment in advancement, but it’s not the finish line by any means and we will not rest until we find better treatments, better outcomes, and ultimately cures. Our kids deserve nothing less.
As you hopefully gather today to recognize the wonderful mothers in your lives, I hope you’ll join me in offering your prayers to the moms at Roswell and across the country who are fighting this unimaginable battle on behalf of their beautiful innocent children. America stands by them in their time of need.
