Langworthy’s Weekly Statement: The Saturday Night Shooting Incident

April 26, 2026

FROM CONGRESSMAN NICK LANGWORTHY: Last night, at the annual White House Correspondents Dinner attended by the President, First Lady, Vice President, members of the Cabinet, and several members of Congress, a gunman breached the security perimeter and charged the event firing shots.
A U.S. Secret Service officer took a bullet to the chest and by the grace of God and his bullet-resistant vest, he did not sustain any serious injuries. I want to join in offering my sincerest gratitude and support for our incredible law enforcement in both the Secret Service and the DC Metro Police who courageously and swiftly apprehended the gunman and protected the President and the event’s attendees. An investigation began immediately to uncover the details about the shooter—a 31-year-old male from California– and the motive behind the attack. While we are awaiting that information from law enforcement, we know this to be true: President Trump has survived two assassination attempts and there is a scourge of political violence that is corroding our country. My heart went out to Erika Kirk who was in attendance in the ballroom during the incident, visibly upset and shaken, forced to relive an event reminiscent of her husband’s murder. I can only imagine her thoughts of her children.

It has to stop.

But first and foremost, Congress needs to act in reopening and funding DHS—NOW. The brave Secret Service agents who put their lives on the line last night have been living under this shutdown and still showing up to work anyway for more than two and a half months—the longest shutdown of an agency in U.S. history. Our very first order of business when we are back in Washington MUST be to fully fund our government. We must work together—Democrats and Republicans—and do what’s right for our nation. There is no place for political violence and the change our country needs must start in the halls of Congress. May God continue watching over the President and all those who are selflessly serving our nation.

Sincerely,

Rep. Nicholas A. Langworthy
Member of Congress
